Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Yuans are indigenous, but perhaps influenced by Kilo in terms of their increasing capability as compared to those Kilo Projects.

I do not think all Yauns are AIP. Tphuang? Franco-Russo? Cirvine11?

I believe the 039Bs all have AIP. Not sure about the 039As though.

With respect to nuclear subs, looks like
first gen -> 091
second gen -> 093
third gen -> 093B (or whatever the improved one is called)
fourth gen -> 095

We will see though.

Are the 039As the first two Yuan boats?

Agreed on the SSNs.

Question: why would the improved 093 variant be considered a new generation of SSN by itself?

There must be a big push for China to develop AIP, deal between Pakistan and Germany was 90% complete when Pakistan pulled out of the deal and started talking with the Chinese

And no one does AIP like the Germans, thier AIP is based on fuel cells and I think it was U-34 that crossed the Atlanic totally submerged and stayed under water without snorkel for 18 days!!! A capability only reserved for nuclear submarines

Germans technology at its best no questions about it, no other SSK can do what Type 212 does

All PN Agosta 90B are fitted with AIP, PN likes it a lot, the low numbers compared with India means PN needs to make every sub count

Now if PN switched to Chinese SSK with AIP there must be substance there, otherwise a compromise on equipment is not a opition for PN, not a big ticket item like submarine anyway

Probably China and Pakistan are in design talks of what the requirements are for PN and see if they can make this work

So I guess Chinese AIP is probably quite reasonable that is really my point

Chinese should have at least some kinda AIP system in production since they are offering S-20 export submarine with AIP system installed.

The person declined to disclose the maximum depth and endurance of the S20. We were told the weapons fit may varry according to customer requirements but the S20 may accommodate heavy torpedoes and anti-ship missiles from six torpedo tubes and deploy mines and special forces. It may also be fitted with AIP (air-independent propulsion) system if a customer requires.

Yeah I read this when it came out I also remember reading that Chinese were using supercomputers to model design of new propeller systems for submarines, overall I think they have whole wealth of experience in submarines but haven't really mastered the fine part of the art, but now it looks like they are doing it and making progress too both in nuclear and conventional fields

If number is what is needed, then cost must figure heavily into Pakistani considerations. German goods are not cheap and the Chinese almost certain heavily undercut the Germans in prices.
