basically said that they got a prototype as early as 1998 and the AIP engines come in the form of 20 and 100 kw. Of note, the stirling engines used on Gotland generate 75 kw each. So, 2 100 kw AIP engine on the larger Yuan would make sense.

When I click on those links, I can see the pictures.

And I know those are just some CGs, but it could be close to the real thing.

No way they're real, look like amature CG works to me. But on a side note, I heard from Chinese news that they've developed working AIP systems and have installed them in their subs already. Is it true? I thought they had some problems with the whole AIP thing.

Clearly CGs, and unfortunately even in that department they're bad ones too. One thing about nuclear subs is that they have relatively taller and longer tail fins than a conventional sub, so that part is likely to stick out of the water. The artist should have considered that.

The artist does not show much technical flair in the design of the sub. The sail is too small. The Soviets had similarly small sails on some of their past submarines, and they were discontinued for a reason. The sail here looks like straight out of a November class, which was one of the earliest nuclear sub designs of the Soviet Union. Small sails cannot pack enough sensors. PLAN subs have moderately large sails because there is a required number of sensors. The last Russian made Akulas also featured larger sails than their predecessors, again to hold more sensors.

Yeah, I don't like the sail either, but apart from that, I think it's pretty good CG.

I can't see them. It's all red "x"s. When I click the links, it says the page is unavailable. Is there another source?

The sail is a CG alright. The part of the submarine in contact with the sea water and ice floats looks real to me. If it's too a CG, some effort there. It may be possible to make out the shape of the submarine in the original photo, and to make a guess from there as to the actual type of submarine.
