PLAN invited to participate in RIMPAC for first the time (2014)

I wouldn't recommend it if it does not have a grade four(BSL-4) biological containment unit built in.

Right.. Hospital ships like the PA or Mercy are meant to treat and stabilize trauma cases and triage mass casualties like an ER. They are not meant to handle pandemics or global infectious diseases.

Well...all the festivities are over and the ships have all sailed away.

I have looked at hundreds and hundreds of pictures from RIMPAC 2014.

I have to say it was one of the best RIMPACS I have ever kept track of. The Chinese acquitted themselves well, and I believe they learned a lot while there, and also earned a lot of well deserved respect. They are a very squared away group of personnel...good sailors.

Here's two of several very impressive pictures of the photo op shots of the at-sea portion, showing all participating vessels. On the far top or left side, the second and fourth ships are the PLAN DDG and FFG...Toward the back of the formation is the PLAN hospital ship and AOR. Use the high res versions to zoom in on them. These pics would make excellent desk tops.

Why Did China Participate in RIMPAC With One Ship And Spy On It With Another?

Probably for a combination of these reasons:

1) Gather valuable intelligence on many different Navies
2) Retaliate for close and sustained spying of Chinese assets and activities by US intelligence platforms
3) Great experience and training for Chinese sailors, shipborne technicians, and spys
4) Because they could

I'd be surprised if they didn't send a spy ship there. Pretty routine stuff, and I bet they wouldn't have sent it if the PLAN ships were involved in some of the more complex maneuvers where their passive sensors would've taken the same data the elint ship did.

Agreed. As long as it did not physically intrude into and hazard the exercises, such surveillance efforts are pretty routine.

The real import was the infusion of the very sizable PLAN group of ships and the very positive impression those personnel left.

Nothing but good will come from that, and I hope they become a regular part of the exercises.
