And the video is also claiming that the carrier will have EMAL catapults and a ski ramp. Anyone care to speculate on that?

That would require huge strengthening of J-15 nose wheel . Not only to endure catapult launch, but to overcome centripetal force when it gets on curved ski ramp . Remember it is Fc = m v2 / r , therefore it would increase dramatically with increased speed and mass .

Thanks for posting those videos. The first video is in Chinese and way tooooo long..so... why is the second video showing Nimitz class?.Duh...

thank you!

First video is from a local TV station talk show that usually discuss about current hot military topics with regular guests including Prof.ZZZ from National Defence University of China.

It's entertaining and intersting show with some of the military history stories Prof.ZZZ is telling. But don't expect any ground breaking information from the show. They always quote other news source or internet hot topics as discussion point. It's kind of like military fans chatting show.

Second video looks like is not even from any news organizations but some random guy uploading a video to youtube. :D

I do not believe at all that the Chinese are going to build a carrier with a ski ramp and catapults both.

We have speculated in the past about a potential hybrid...improved Liaoning with waste cats...but I have decided that I do not believe they will do that.

I think we will see the 2nd carrier (their first indigenous carrier) be a STOBAR carrier that looks pretty much like the Liaoning, with a few improvements (like a larger hanger, smaller island, etc.). In fact, the Chinese have pretty much said that this is what they are doing.

I think their 3rd and 4th carriers may well be conventional CATOBAR carriers, with steam cats, along the lines of a Forrestal class, but built to Chinese standards and updated over the 1950s US design. I suppose it is possible that they might try EMALS for those...but if those second two are conventionally powered, then I think it is less likely.

After that, I believe they start building a Chinese nuclear carrier design...and build those going forward, improving them over time much the way the US Navy improved the Nimitz class over the last 40 years. They will be CATOBAR and perhaps will probably have some form of EMALS at that point.

Time will tell...but I know this, any nation that could field a gas turbine powered, CATOBAR carrier that is a modernized carrier the size of a Forrestal class (and then surround it with effective escorts), would instantly have the 2nd most powerful type of aircraft carrier in the world.

She is not a "paper tiger."
Of course the Liaoning is not, and will not be, a paper tiger.

With the capability of eventually having 24 J-15s aboard, and with the types of weapons that aircraft can carry, she has a strong capability.

I have always contended that although the Liaoning will be used for training...she has to, she is the first...that she will also be completely operational and combat capable. I still hold to that.

Now, as to how much armament the J-15 is going to be able to launch with off the ski-jump...I believe she will definitively be able to carry some air to surface ordinance, but we will have to see them doing exercises with combat loads before we know exactly how much.

If this photo is to be believed they are striking(sending) weapons below from the flight deck down. Full up rounds to! Impressive most impressive. The USN stores missiles in containers in magazines well below the hangar deck..just sayin'...

If they are being sent below to a magazine why don't they load them from the pier/dock on to one of the aircraft elevators and strike them below..aaarrrvvv.. that's navy talk.

Now is there an magazine on the 03 or 02 level just below the flight deck? If so where is it? Looks like to me there is an opening in the deck just in front of one of the arresting wires on the starboard side. That does not make any sense to me..at all.. because those spaces(room) that contain that arresting gear mechanics are HUGE and were that missile appears to be going should be a space for the arresting gear collector.....I don't get it.

AND ..if there is an magazine below the flight deck I hope it's well armored..because one day an..never mind....

Somebody get me a ticket to China so I can get a gander at this ship up close and personal.. I'll take Equation with me so he can find a wife and stop oggeling Chinese models..

Jeff Head can tag a long...

!

Could it possibly crew tactical weapons emergency training or some sort? I'm thinking like a fire below the deck and therefore are removing the ones already outside it safe container as a drill perhaps?
