Taiwan doesn't need to be intimidated. South Korea is the important country. It is important to that country that there will be no violence between Japan and China. The chance of violence, small at this time, will be reduced if South Korea changes sides to China. That will also make possible the reunification of Korea, one country - two systems. And even before reunification will it make possible the building of a natural gas pipeline from Siberia and connecting South Korea's railways to the Chinese railways including a high speed line Seoul - Pyongyang - Beijing . Those Chinese carriers will be part of the backing for South Korea's change, perhaps even before they are all actually built.

I think you're both misreading the politics of East Asia slightly here...but since we aren't supposed to be derailing this thread I'll leave it at that. PM me if you want my reasons (or start a new thread)

You want to see the most lavish accomoadations you can find aboard any aircraft carrier in the world?

Well, look at these:

147505-china-aircraft-carrier-2-of-11.jpg

147506-china-aircraft-carrier-3-of-11.jpg

These are the kind of accomodations...if you can afford it...that you can get on the former Soviet carrier Kiev, which has been turned into a theme park with its own five-star hotel aboard. Those are the "Presidential" suites.

...and, while on deck, treat yourself to a hot bowl of "beef noodle soup (niu rou mian)," ...oh man, that would taste very good (热碗牛肉面口味很好) while you explore the Kiev.

International Business Times said:
An old Russian military aircraft carrier named "Kiev" has been revamped and reopened as a floating luxury hotel in China.

The ure-opening of the Kiev came just days after sea trials for China's first aircraft carrier Varyag caused heightened tension in the South China Sea

Proudly billed as China's first aircraft carrier hotel, the Tiajin Aircraft Carrier Hotel's owners believe China's burgeoning naval power will drum up customer interest.

"Previously, China didn't have aircraft carriers. People find them mysterious and are curious about them. Even though China's first aircraft carrier has now gone on sea trials, it will be quite hard for the public to ever visit it," said marketing manager Liu Chang. "I guess people can come here to fulfill their curiosity."

Certainly luxurious compared to an able seaman's bunk, but rather TACKY no?

Hate to say this but it appears that the interior-decoration design was done by the folks in Pimp My Ride.

I for one would be deeply ashamed to be seen in such surroundings. (I am NOT referring to the rest of the ship though).

It's made to be a Presidential level suite for a five star hotel...to purposely appeal to people with a LOT of money.

That's why you or I would feel uncomfortable there and would never consider paying that type of money.

But for people who are used to that level of lavish surrounding...they would pay the money to have it, even on the old Kiev.

So, they have a couple of those types of suites to appeal to them. I have no idea how many other rooms they have, but my guess is that they have less expensive rooms too.

Anyhow, I thought it interesting that the company that had created the tourist attraction included such accommodations..

I appreciate deeply your sense of propriety slim, but as the world of the Chinese citizen has grown, so have those with the resources and the desire to appreciate these trappings of wealth, as long as the ship was seaworthy, and the sheets clean, it really wouldn't bother me, I might even enjoy it. When our twins were little and I was working two full time jobs at church and with DD adults in a day program, I was off the week around Christmas. Since we couldn't really afford a real vacation, we would go spend the night at a local Holiday Inn Express that had an indoor pool, we took the twins, and they would have a blast jumping in the pool which was fairly shallow and then running over to join Mom and Dad in the hot-tub.

I think it says something about the level of taste that many of China's nouveau riche have. This is not too different from any country where a small proportion people became very rich within a very short amount of time.

It probably has more to do with the taste of the owner of the hotel than the taste of the customers. The only way to show that it represents the taste of Chinese riches is that these fancy cabins are booked 100% of the time and there is a long waiting list. Then you can say that the taste of the Chinese riches is..... There is always some weird things out there that the owners /managers try to do to attract customers. It doesn't mean the customers have to like it and will but it.
