I would not attempt to placate Trump if I was China. He will only interpret that as weakness and will be emboldened to act more aggressively toward China. People with bully mentality like Trump only respect one thing - power.
Who said anything about placating Trump? This is where nuance in geopolitics comes in. Placating someone comes from a position of weakness. Manipulating someone comes from a position of strength.
Then make a deal with the Indians regarding border issue and promise them American dollars/capitals.
The DPP, which currently governs Taiwan, is at its core an organization and ideology founded upon a victimhood narrative: "We're not Chinese, we were colonized by the Chinese in 1949. They oppressed us!"
People who embrace such victimhood narratives tend to defer major decisions to others or to fate.
