Why would you cut preferential trade status with your self? It is still far too soon for drastic actions. Patience you must have!

Yes, if time is on your side (as everyone here seems to agree) then it's only logical to restrain yourself to mostly symbolic moves like exercises. Aggressive escalation is playing against your own strength.

Some kind of line was cross and unless something changes on the Taiwan side, activities will likely escalate to beyond past levels. Otherwise it would appear the guy challanged the status quo successfully and push more in the future. There are many things China can do without actually invade.

You respond with a symbolic move with symbolic moves. Sanction a few select DPP politicians. No real harm done, but your message is heard loud and clear. Even economic retaliation is much further up the escalatory ladder than China needs to climb at the time being.

ROCAF pilot now complaining in open letter and shit talking Lai about relentless pressure they are under, particularly in wake of the 520 speech and the tensions it caused:

Says out of 10 pilots, 9 are thinking of quitting and 1 is thinking about getting promoted to desk job due to overwork and cancelled leave. The pilot who wrote the letter is about to quit himself this year.

Regarding the public letter purportedly from ROCAF pilot threatening to retire, naturally ROCNMD Is calling it fake news:

However, our ex-DPP friend Julian Kuo says not only is increased rate of early retirement true, ROCNMD is quietly responding to this by increasing the penalty of early retirement from 3 million NTD to 10 million:

When “yourself” is using the preferential trade status to subsidize weapons procurement, you should probably put a stop to it.
Crazy, stop funding rebel that fights you is such a crazy idea! Nobody would be having this conversation anywhere else. Yet here we are.

I suspect some sort of corruption going on that led to this irrational policy.

How do you propose stopping it? Will cutting preferential trade status stop the weapons procurement? Taiwanese weapons procurement should be viewed as Taiwan attempting to buy US backing, essentially protection money. In the event of an actual armed conflict, the military value of those weapons is effectively zero. I would be surprised if the entire ROCAF is able to score a single air to air kill or hit a single a naval asset. I'd be surprised to see ROCAF aircraft even taking off after a few days of conflict.
