8.6mm? Why not just tell me it's a .338 Lapua?

Curious, it it a norm to go imperial on calibers, or is that only in the US?

Hmm... I wonder if they are gong to make a rifle for the .408 Cheytec

There are a number of rifle cartridges in the 8.6mm realm some smaller some larger. European nations and Russia have adopted a number rifles in LM but the US is moving to .338 Norma magnum. .408 is pretty much proprietary and it’s range overlaps with .338 magnum calibers and 12.7mm HMG rounds. Basically it’s a 10.36x77mm anti material rifle round. As such for neither the US or PRC does making such a rifle make sense as they already have weapons in similar roles. For EOD or sniping .338 caliber rifles are lighter and more man portable for EOD 12.7mm are more powerful.

What is going on with China's gatling guns??? China keeps on showing those pretty footage of new gatling guns under development and display samples of new gatling guns during expos yet the they seem to never get into service with the PLA? What happened to the previous hwa-ching minigun? what happened to the previous gatling gun that had this nice film of it firing from a mengshi?
Most likely the PLA put out a tender for gatlings and every company who could developed one to try their luck.

The model the PLA chose will be kept under wraps while the losers are put up for export as a last ditch hell Mary to try to make some money. The really good ones secure enough export success to warrant a second look by the PLA, who may order some as well, especially once it has gone through a lot of refinement due to export customs demands and unit cost falls due to economies of scale.

It’s the same basic model and cycle for all sorts of weapons.

Are the Gatling guns made in China driven by external power source like American rotary guns, or use internal gas action like Russian guns?

The one illustrated in #2630 looks like it is externally driven.

Gatlings, OK; but what caliber are they intended to use? Hopefully not the rimmed 7,62x54R since that rim would render fast an unobstructed feeding more problematic. By the way, has anyone ever tried to re-engineer the 7,62x54 to a rimless design??

Simulated training. The caption in the last image says he missed the tank. The disappointment on his face is immense. :p
