Gatling style guns are not the only type used for the job just the coolest. They do seem to have configured it with spade grips which means it’s tailored for the job.

Not gatling gun.

So...meh.
No optics as well. I also wonder why the PLA fixed the gun onto a floor-mounted pintle (not to mention they also modified the handle of the gun into that of the M2 Browning). The gunners would have much better flexibility and firing angles if they would be able to carry their machine guns and fire from their shoulder like what the US Army did back then in Vietnam (plus the gunners could also use the iron sights on their machine guns). During the Vietnam War many Huey door gunners only had a bungee cord securing their M60s from falling out of the chopper.

While it sounds dangerous, the gunners enjoyed awesome flexibility and firing angles and they would even lean out of the chopper to get a good shot at enemies that got into the Huey's blind spots like the gif below:
Meanwhile with the PLA's design the gunners could only fire out from the open door and engage enemies on the right or left side of the chopper.

btw what gun is the PLA using as door guns??

Mounting the gun offers more ability to load additional ammunition and stability. Free hand looks cool in movies but if the chopper starts maneuvering a gunner of going to have a hell of a time especially if he is also free standing.
