China's first reported missile defense system test has been successfully carried out.
It is reported as a mid-course interception, implying that it is exoatmospheric. That suggests at least an MRBM was the target since SRBMs don't go exoatmospheric -- may be an old DF-3 was used.
This system would be effective against low tier nuclear powers that have a liquid fueled MRBM but don't have the technology for MIRVs and decoys.
