It is reported as a mid-course interception, implying that it is exoatmospheric. That suggests at least an MRBM was the target since SRBMs don't go exoatmospheric -- may be an old DF-3 was used.

This system would be effective against low tier nuclear powers that have a liquid fueled MRBM but don't have the technology for MIRVs and decoys.

This is a very interesting development. We no almost nothing of PRC's missile defense plans.

I don't think df-3 have the ability to antimissile beause it is a liquid missile,it spends many hours before firing,I guess a modified rocket-KT was used.

I was saying that a DF-3 would be the target, not the rocket.

I think we can all agree that this test was a test of a ballistic missile intercept, not a preliminary test of the boost vehicle. After all, China already tested anti-satellite weapon 3 years ago! It seems pretty certain that either DF-3 or DF-4 (former more likely) was the test target.

If KT is used then earlier rumors from western sources that ASAT used a DF-21 type rocket are incorrect. If KT is used, the ASAT and ABM missiles are longer ranged and more powerful than previously expected.

Exactly, program is old, but due to secrecy we heard little about it, till now. I bet decades old, but due to money issues particular early on in program delayed development significantly.

Would it be wise to have such a large missile (KT) as a long term ASAT/ABM system?
The US used a modified SM-3 to respond to China's ASAT test - and the SM-3 is far smaller than the KT-1 I believe...

...So was this test of a new indigenous system of a S-300/PMU/PMU-2/HQ-9 - and was it a complete system like THAAD or PAC-3, or just a one off modification like the 2007 ASAT test?
