Laf CMF is a nuthouse. It isn't reliable or timely source of anything anymore, don't waste your time with it.

Yes, those T-96 with reactive armor pics are genuine. The first pics of them appeared as captures of CCTV a few months ago.

Not only is the reactive armor new, if yuo look at the gunner's optics, the box is significantly larger than on the regular T-96.

First of all I would like to thank you for your replies. This is my first post in the forum, but I was here for quite some time 8 years. Well time has gone quite quickly. I saw this site start from just an ordinary website being now a well established one with reliable info about the chinese military.

Second let's come back to the topic, there's a lot of discussion about the role of the T-96 MBT compared to that of the T-99 MBT, from the pics shown in the CMF there's clearly evidence that china has decided to continue the development of the T-96, adding reactive armor and also changing the size of the turret.

It's my belief that this development or upgrade will be progressively applied to the rest of the T-96 tanks. It will take time but why only 1 type of tank gets all the upgrades.

If anyone has more info on this new modified T-96 please let me know.

Last but not least how to name this new tank T-96 gai or .... ??

well ur help will be greatly appreciated.

I've heard Type-96G or Gai. Actually, refits and improvements are constantly going on, and seldom reported, since there are no press releases of contracts or whatever. For example, I've heard the Type-99s have been through a few refits already. I've also heard the 96s are steadily being upgraded to 99's FCS standards (which the larger optics may suggest). Of course, these are all rumors.

There were rumors floating around of the 96 with new applique quite a long time before the pictures finally came out. However, there are still lots of photos of type 96s with the original look.

As to 99 vs 96, it is a high-low combination. The type 96 may slowly eventually replace the older models (maybe not 1 for 1), but the type 99 certainly will not be produced in such high numbers, owing to cost.

Hi,

I am wondering what is the unit cost of a Type 96 and what is the unit cost of the Type 99? What are the difference?

Thanks for the price !!! Well hope this new upgrade is applied for those T-96 which are in service. For now the question is when was this upgrade done and how many tanks have been modified. The tank looks so much better. Anyone has info on what has been modified apart the turret.

Any information on its engine? The original tank was already slow at 57km/h (35mph) with a 900hp engine. So getting a new engine would be a need w/ this extra weight. (Glitch at main site? Upgrade to 1000hp and 65km/40mph?)
