Here are some photos from the recent historic Japanese navy's guided missile destroyer Sazanami's visit to China. First of such visit since WWII. Maybe this thread belongs to the picture forum...

Alhough relatively small, the Takanami classDDs, of which the Sazanami is the fourth vessel, packs a strong punch. Has to be an impressive vessel to the Chinese or anyone else.

Here she is tying up to dock in China.

Here's a full view:

She packs a 127mm gun, 2 - 20mm Phalanx CIWS, 32 VLS cells (Mk-41) for Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles or ASROC, 8 - SSM-1B anti-shipping missiles, 6 - 324mm torpedo tubes, 1 - SH-60 helicopters, bow and towed TASS sonar.

I *think* it's equipped with 8 x SSM's. If we look at the following photos:

Notice the top pictures shows what appears to be 2 sets of SSM launchers between the 2 black smock stacks, and the 2nd picture showing one of the SSM sets with 4 launch containers.

the Takanami is a destroyer and the Type054A is a frigate, so both have different strengths...comparing it if you really want to compare the destroyer to a frigate one is a WW2 design while the other is a modern design, with reduced detection signature...firepower i get on that later on. Japan and China should have more of these exchanges in the future to boost cooperation, i would like to see China doing this sometime later this year...

There are 2 X 4 tubes and I neglectred to put that 2 X 4 in there. Thanks for pointing it out. There are, of course eight missiles.
