China and Pakistan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral military cooperation and strategic coordination, with the Chinese Defence Ministry describing the relationship between the two countries as an enduring iron-clad friendship.

Speaking at the monthly press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Defence Ministry Spokesman Colonel Jiang Bin commented on the recent high-level exchanges between the two countries during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to China.

Responding to a question regarding meetings between Chinese and Pakistani leaders and military officials, Colonel Jiang Bin said China and Pakistan were good neighbours linked by mountains and rivers, good friends who trust each other, good partners who support each other, and good brothers who stand together in difficult times.

Colonel Jiang Bin highlighted the close military ties between the two countries and said practical cooperation has yielded fruitful results in the areas of strategic communication, joint exercises and training, personnel exchanges, and defence equipment and technology cooperation.

He said a series of joint military exercises between the armies, navies and air forces of the two countries, including the ‘Warriors’, ‘Ocean Guards’, and ‘Eagles’ exercises, have become hallmark projects of bilateral defence cooperation.

The spokesman said China was willing to work with Pakistan under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries to carry forward traditional friendship, enhance strategic communication, deepen practical cooperation, and firmly support each other on issues concerning core interests.

He added that both sides would continue to elevate military-to-military relations and contribute to building a closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era, while jointly promoting regional and global peace, development and security.

Colonel Jiang Bin noted that in the 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the friendship between the two countries has withstood changes in the international landscape and continued to deepen among the peoples of both nations.

Pakistani friends often describe China-Pakistan friendship as ‘Higher than the mountains, deeper than the oceans and sweeter than honey,’ while the Chinese people affectionately refer to Pakistan as ‘Iron Pakistan’, he said.

Evolution of Pakistan’s Coastal A2/AD Posture: SMASH Deployment & Potential HD-1 Integration

Pakistan’s ongoing expansion of its coastal defense network, alongside the deployment & testing of the P-282 SMASH anti-ship ballistic missile, points to a continued emphasis on strengthening maritime strike capabilities within an emerging A2/AD construct.

Open-source reporting generally places SMASH in the ~350-450 km class, while some analyses suggest that extended-range variants tested in recent trials may reach higher figures, though these remain unconfirmed.

In parallel, Fatah-3 has been assessed in some defence literature as potentially linked to China’s HD-1 missile concept. Its range is commonly estimated in the ~290–450 km class, with ~450 km often cited as an upper-bound figure depending on configuration, although no officially published specification confirms a single definitive value.

Taken together, these developments are best viewed as incremental evolution of layered strike capabilities. Their operational impact will ultimately depend less on headline range figures & more on integration with targeting networks, ISR coverage & deployment density.

KS&EW Before and After the Hangor-Class Project...

1.jpg

A comparison of Google Earth imagery from 2 November 2018 (left) and 8 February 2021 (right) highlights the remarkable transformation of Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) following the commencement of the Hangor-class submarine program.

The upgrades include the installation of the Syncrolift (Ship Lift & Transfer System), the construction of a large Final Assembly Hall (FAH) measuring approximately 135 × 38 meters, and multiple dedicated workstations for submarine construction & assembly. These developments have significantly enhanced KS&EW's capacity to undertake complex naval shipbuilding projects locally.

Today, the yard is busier than ever. Alongside construction work on the Hangor-class submarines, the remaining two Babur-class corvettes are also under construction & both appear to be nearing their launch phase. In addition, construction of the first Jinnah-class frigate is underway at the shipyard, further underscoring the growing workload and capabilities of the facility.

The scale of activity visible at KS&EW reflects the substantial investment made in expanding Pakistan's indigenous naval shipbuilding infrastructure & its ability to support multiple major naval programs simultaneously.
