Meanwhile it seems PAF is requesting to buy 'Life extension program' for its F16 b52 fleet.

Idk why they need 92 link 16 data nodes/hardware, like you dont even have that many f16s, spares?

It’s not just about securing spares—PAF is also pursuing the full “V” upgrade package for its entire F-16 fleet. Also, PAF is additionally interested in the 14 ex-PAF F-16s that were withheld under the Pressler Amendment and never delivered, which are now being used by the U.S. Navy as aggressor aircraft at NSAWC in Fallon, Nevada.

There’s also a possible deal for 12 Iraqi Block 52s, expected to be obtained through a barter arrangement involving 16 JF-17 Block IIIs, although the proposal would still require U.S. approval.

Wheat/Corn sold to PAF with F-16 money OR "withheld" jets used by US Navy/USAF type stories: That's not quite true, because..

President Clinton briefed Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on US efforts to compensate Pakistan for the $658 million it paid for the 28 F-16s. US officials said the United States has already paid $157 million of this back to Islamabad, raising the money by selling aircraft components to other countries. New Zealand agreed to pay some $105 million over 10 years to lease the fighters, providing additional funds that could be used to give Pakistan some of its money back.

At the end of 1998, the United States announced it would pay Pakistan $326.9 million in cash and up to $140 million in other compensation to settle the eight-year dispute. The $140 million will include about $60 million in US white wheat that Pakistan will receive during the current US fiscal year, which began on October 1st. The remaining $80 million in compensation will be negotiated by the two sides.

Of the $658 million PAF was reimbursed $483.9 million. $60 million of wheat and $80million to be compensated. No additional F-16s coming PAFs way from Presseler Amendment era. LOL

But this hard engrained rhetoric of wheat-4-jets or pending/withheld-vipers doesn't get old. :D

Not exactly.
If we’re clearing up myths, let’s at least clear up the actual facts:

There was no corn shipments involved at all.
The partial compensation the US provided was mainly through soybean deliveries — and even then, the compensation was never fully settled.

Yes, PAF got $483.9 million back out of the $658 million.

But the remaining amount wasn’t wrapped up in some tidy “$60M wheat + $80M adjustments” package. It was a messy soybean-based compensation arrangement that never reached the full amount owed.

Second, nowhere did I claim that PAF is going to receive the 14 withheld F-16s.

What I said was that PAF can explore the same kinds of options it had previously pursued — such as the Pressler-era impounded aircraft or the Iraqi F-16s via barter-style arrangements. These were historical precedents, not promises or pending deliveries.

And as for the classic “no jets withheld / no pending vipers” narrative — the freeze was real, the aircraft were impounded, and the compensation dragged on for years. That’s why these stories aren’t exactly folklore.

But hey, the legend of wheat-for-jets is definitely funnier than the actual story of soybean diplomacy, so I get why people keep using it. :D ✈️

I wonder when the next Shaheen exercise will happen..

Not sure if thats a good idea, thats gonna be expensive, i dont recall exactly but isnt there a new engine =more power requirements in V upgrade, and new engine doesnt fit in old body so it needs modifications or something.

Actually, the point wasn’t about trying to fit the V-standard engine into older F-16s. That would be expensive and not a practical approach — though to be fair, I wouldn’t completely rule out engine-related upgrades either, depending on how PAF eventually decides.

What I was referring to be a bit different: based on some of the discussions that were circulating within PAF circles, the idea had been to upgrade the entire F16 fleet to V-standard as much as realistically possible. And if that didn’t go through, then the understanding was that — aside from the Block 52s — the older F-16s would likely start phasing out post 2030.

That’s also why PAF had been quite interested in the Iraqi Block 52s: it would have allowed them to maintain at least two squadrons of capable F-16s if the older blocks began retiring.

So overall, it's more about fleet-wide upgrade planning.
