Other Chinese 5th generation concepts ... not J-20 or FC-31

With the F-35 and X-2 projects, there were multiple proposed design planforms before the aircraft was finalized (and in the latter case, axed).

Institute 601's plan was Snow Owl, Institute 611's plan was Mighty Dragon. The Mighty Dragon was later chosen as be the J-20, while the Snow Owl was chopped down and become FC-31.

Does anyone know what's the background of these wind-tunnel models? Are they just to study different configurations or are they related to a certain project?

The one in the right corner however seems to be SAC/601 Institute's design for the heavy fighter, which was later won by CAC with the type that became the J-20. (edited here)

The guy in the top photo is Li Tian from the SAC, or the father of Chinese stealth. None of the images you posted appears to be J-20's predecessor.

Sorry if my post was misleading, I never meant it is related to the J-20, but to SAC's proposal, which was later won by CAC with the type that became the J-20. Pardon for the confusion.

Lower right.

Really?? ... so SAC's entry into the PLAAF's heavy 5th genertaion fighter contest or RfP was the "Snowy Owl"??
I thought this type was a slightly smaller and lighter type developed either in parallel or slightly later and evolved into the FC-31.

Looks like one of those wind tunnel models is the triplane layout that was hypothesized to be the SAC fifth gen competitor we heard back in 2008 or so.
