yea, also a good lesson to those who called it all "propaganda" and "ps" not long ago :)

three successful tests in a row at an incredible pace - an outstanding achievement.

on the personal level: this kim is real brave man.
one can hardly imagine anybody stay so close.
another reason why some thought it was ps.

Look, they may well have launched a missile. But watch the video. It is an illusion that the great leader is that close to the actual launch.

They never show the missile being launched at the same time as he is in the photo. It's all cuts and edits.

North Korean subs are relics. If they retrofitted one to launch a missile...bully for them.

But their subs are loud and will be easily tracked and destroyed by modern ASW capabilities.

Such a vessel will have to launch from absolutely protected waters. And that is probably what they intend.

They are trying to show that they have that sub launch capability. Next they will claim that they have one of their nucs on those missiles. That's what this is really about...ultimately showing they have the SLBM capability for nucs.

But they are short range...and they are on very old technology subs. The fact that they can threaten South Korea and perhaps Japan from their own protected waters is the real message here.

The other stuff with the great leader (who by the way is a ruthless animal and not really "brave" at all) being there in the picture, is simply propaganda. The real message is what I just mentioned and the potential for that one is not lost on western planners or leaders.

sometimes facts are hard to swallow :)
and careful with great leader qualifications: his funs might remind you that he killed a lot less people than one of our nobel prize winner, renown for his peace-keeping missions.

I have no problem with facts. I do have problems with propaganda colored as facts and will call them as I see them

As to your other implications...such things do not scare me. I figure if the good Lord wants me home...I'll be brought home.

In the meantime I have my FAL and Remington shotgun, and a lot of armed friends and LE around me waiting for such hogwash.

So, nicky DO NOT even go there with such implications/threats on SD, or your time here will be very short lived indeed.

emotions run counter rational. nothing personal or threatening in previous post.
read carefully: just a reminder that obama killed a lot more people than kim, so far (however cynical, but true).
no use to compare first steps in slbm building with sophisticated us naval systems and asw capabilities.
take a closer look at the program itself and the pace of performance. it follows a well known (cold war) pattern: first a popup missile test on the ground.

pictures show the first test was a clear success: missile landed exactly as calculated. first stage engines worked as planned. it meant also that by the time of the test kim had managed to establish reliable missiles engine production. however obsolete some might consider them, missile's engines worked fine and allowed the program to go quickly further. no doubt, it was a great achievement for north korea.

whether we proceed further is now up to you.

Care to explain where You see a "missile landed exactly as calculated" ??? To admit I'm an aircraft man and not really up-to-date to missile technology but here I see nothing but a piece of dirt somewhere on earth.

Anyway I beg You to calm down, Your altitude is simply off. Regarding that missile test - and even more since we all know how propaganda works in NK - how do You know for sure ??

It ii simply unbelievable stupid - and not a testimony for this technology's maturity - to be so close to a sub-launch especially if it is indeed the first time. Or do You really thing that small fat guy would risk to be torn into many small pieces during a malfunction ? Do You really thing this missile was launched from this boat shown in that video ??? ... especially since it clearly shows not a single sign of being capable to have at least such a huge missile on board.

IMO this test - successful as it was maybe - was most likely from a platform erected probably only a few feet under the surface ...

Anyway we can surely continue to argue ...

Nick, I would suggest you simply stop going down this path and trying to justify your position.

A simple "I am sorry," would work...but not this.

I am not comparing...there is no comparison. I am making objective comments on what I see...and not hyping it up to be more than it is.

How can you possibly know this. You only know what the North Koreans tell you.

No one has debated that/. As I said, if they have managed to retrofit a missile like this onto their old subs...bully for them..

Don't let your colors show too much. Of course North Korea is going to view it as a success and tout it as such. but that was never the point.

No, as I have explained...it is really up to you.

READ SD RULES OF BEHAVIOR and abide by them. If you do so, and then follow moderator instruction should you receive it, you will do fine.[/quote]

popup test: missile (actually first stage) is tested for lift-off only. engines work a few seconds.
what' s new: a sand cushion site for the falling missile adjacent to the launch pad. never seen anything like it before (someone knows better, please?). easy to recover any broken details.
look where it fell: it means right from the start the missile held the right direction (not always so) and landed at prepared "soft" landing site at about forty meters from launch point. the sandbox after test allows some rough dimensional estimates: missile might be about ten meters by one and a half. further tests just proved it. available google earth images suggest the first popup pest occurred between july and december last year. it made possible to proceed further and start preparations for sea firings using both submersible test platform and then a sub.
