China's first bio-aviation kerosene producer trials clean energy production

China's leading oil producer Sinopec announced the country's first successful trial production of bio-aviation kerosene on Tuesday, marking China's solid step towards large-scale commercial production of aviation biofuel.

The first trial production, conducted by Sinopec Zhenhai Refining and Chemical Company, generated around 606 tonnes of bio-aviation kerosene, part of which will be supplied to airline companies.

Bio-aviation kerosene is produced from renewable resources such as waste cooking oil and animal and plant fat. Compared with traditional petroleum-based aviation fuel, the new biofuel can reduce CO2 emissions by over 50 percent or more throughout an airplane's service cycle.

Self-developed high-tech project

In 2009, Sinopec started to conduct research on bio-aviation kerosene. It obtained China's first bio-aviation kerosene airworthiness certificate in 2014, making it the first country in Asia and the fourth country in the world to have self-developed bio-aviation kerosene technology.

In August 2020, China built its first large-scale industrial plant for producing bio-aviation kerosene with a designed annual capacity of processing around 100,000 tonnes.

Huang Aibin, director of the Sinopec Zhenhai Refining and Chemical Company, told China Media Group (CMG) that "the amount of waste cooking oil recycled in a city with a 10 million population is about 10,000 tonnes per month. If runs at full capacity, this plant can almost digest all the recycled gutter oil of a city this size annually."

Huang also mentioned the biggest difficulty is handling gutter oil as it contains a large number of fatty acid compounds, sulfur, chlorine, metal elements and other impurities, which are extremely difficult to remove. Huang's team independently developed a special catalyst to optimize the processes of mixing, catalysis and heating.

According to data, if China replaces its current aviation kerosene of around 30 million tonnes aviation kerosene with biofuel, the country can reduce about 55 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, which is equivalent to dropping driving over 30 million family economic cars for a whole year.

I would trust this over anything else, I’m not sure that’s saying much. They are also open sourcing chip design software tools. This is a great way to break software monopolies.

Chinese researchers from Tianjin university and Nankai university created a new kind of membranes for faster desalination.

In tests, the new membrane can reject 99.91% of NaCl with "an ultrafast water fux of 267 kg per sq meter per hour". This result outperforms the state-of-the-art designs and is 4 to 10 times higher than the conventional membranes.

The research team has developed an environment friendly process that can produce the membrane at the kilogram scale with a unit cost of 1 yuan per gram. This is close to the breakeven point for production at "industrial scale". The scientists are hard working at improving the process to realize mass production.

Ultrafast seawater desalination with covalent organic framework membranes​

The lack of access to clean water for billions of people represents a fundamental global sustainability challenge that must be addressed. Seawater desalination using membrane technologies provides a promising solution; however, the dominating desalination membranes often show low permeation flux and deficient fouling resistance. Here we achieve ultrafast desalination by taking advantage of covalent organic framework (COF) membranes where TaPa-SO3H nanosheets are linked by TpTTPA nanoribbons through electrostatic and ππ interactions to form an ordered and robust structure. The optimum COF membrane exhibits excellent rejection of NaCl (99.91%) and more importantly an ultrafast water flux of 267 kg m−2 h−1, which outperforms the state-of-the-art designs and is 4–10 times higher than conventional membranes. Furthermore, the desired fouling resistance underpins superior operational stability (108 h) and high salinity (7.5 wt%) tolerance, offering great potential in practical applications.

Yes. Another way would be to put Microsoft under cybersecurity review. An OS is the ultimate platform monopoly, but so far only Chinese companies and no foreign companies have come under investigation for anti-competitive behaviors. The hope is that, that changes.

Also curious to see how this relates to the Deepin project. If Kylin is to be China's main open source OS, does that mean Deepin is relegated to secondary status?
