Years ago there was a Manga/Anime title form shirow masamune Called New dominion Tank Police. In which in a Judge Dredd like future Japanese police have traded in there Toyota's for Tanks. One of the Character in the Series Was a Police woman named Leona Who after totaling the bosses Dreadnaught on treds build her own Mini tank She affectionately names Bonaparte. That Picture just reminds of it. The baby tank that just keeps going even when the big MBT's are out of the action.

T-37a was the first amphibious tank in the world put to mass production started in 1938 and ended after ww2. I initially thought the little guy was some great grand daddy of the Type 96 until some research was done. The T-27 lineage that produced the famous T-34 turned out to be the ancestor.

Russia August 04, 14:37 UTC+4

The 2014 World Tank Biathlon kicked off on Monday at a firing range outside Moscow with international tank crews from 12 countries participating in the newly introduced global military sporting event.
“The first ever Tank Biathlon World Championship kick off today at the firing range in Alabino,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at the opening ceremony of the global competition. “It may be said without any exaggerations that this event turns a new page in the international military cooperation.”

The tank biathlon runs on August 4-16 in Alabino, a town to the southwest of Moscow, and begins on Monday with the championship’s first stage, which is individual’s race consisting of three heats and runs on August 4-6.

Crews from Angola, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Serbia will compete in the first heat. They will be followed by the crews of hosts Russia, China, Kuwait and Armenia in the second heat and then by India, Belarus, Venezuela in the third heat.
The championship’s second stage, which is 3 km Sprint, runs on August 8-9 and the third stage, which is pursuit, runs on August 11-12.

All international crews were provided with Russia’s T-72B tanks, or Slingshot, according to NATO classification, while China brought their own tanks for the championship.

General Ivan Buvaltsev, the chief of the Russian armed forces' main department of combat training, said in early June that Russia provided six-week training for foreign tank crews intending to compete on Russian combat vehicles “just for equal opportunities to all the competitors.”

He also said that that this year infantry combat vehicles and airborne assault vehicles will compete along with the tanks.
The Tank Biathlon, which is analogous to the Olympic biathlon discipline, was invented by the Russian military and the first international competition was held in August 2013 in Alabino with the participating crews from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia.

According to the rules of tank biathlon, crews must navigate a distance of up to 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) evading various obstacles, crossing rivers and bridges and shoot at a set of targets. Tanks that miss a target get a penalty lap.

Here's a recording of the International Tank Baithlon. The PLA sent probably three Type 99a1s to compete. At the 1:40:00 mark you can see the Type 99s and offers one of my favourite shots of the Chinese tanks during the competition.

what's happening at 1:42:10? I didn't any other tank have to change crews, did the first tank breakdown? I saw glimpse of the first tank at 1:35:20 then it seems to stuck at 1:38:24

During the race the very front right side plate, protecting the right side wheels, clenched inward and got caught by the tank's track while it covered through a rough section of the terrain. The second tank crew drove there to help inspect the damage. No details or what happened to the tank later but it would've been sent for repairs.

Results from Day 1 of the Tank Biathlon World Championship that runs on the August 4th -16th, has came in.

---
ALABINO, August 05. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian team leads after the opening day of the 2014 Tank Biathlon World Championship, kicked off at testing grounds outside Moscow on Monday.

With international tank crews from 12 countries participating in the newly introduced global military sporting event, Russians lead with the best time after Day 1 of races and are followed by teams from Armenia, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, India, China, Mongolia, Kuwait, Lieutenant-General Yuri Petrov, a deputy head of the Russian Defense Ministry's main department of combat training, said.

“A team from Venezuela finished in the last place due to safety violations,” Petrov, who is also the chief referee of the tournament, said adding that these were the results of the first out of three days of the competition’s individuals. The final results will be decided after the end of the championship’s first stage, which is Individual’s Race consisting of three daily heats and runs on August 4-6.

Only three teams - from Russia, Armenia and China - managed to complete the distance without penalty laps on Monday, Petrov said. Participants in the competition had to particularly battle three types of obstacles, namely mound, track path at mine explosion area and hillside, he said.
The biathlon runs through August 16 and is divided into three stages of three heats each, the Russian Defense Ministry said. The championship’s second stage, which is 3km Sprint, runs on August 8-9 and the third stage, which is Pursuit, runs on August 11-12.

Teams have to race through up to 20km obstacle course in Russian-made T-72B tanks, or Slingshot, according to NATO classification, and fire at targets imitating tanks and helicopters. Crews that miss a target get a penalty lap. China brought its own 96A tanks for the championship.

The Tank Biathlon, which is analogous to the Olympic biathlon discipline, was invented by the Russian military and the first competition at the international level was held in August 2013 in Alabino with the participating crews from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia.

It's finally confirmed and corrected that it's indeed Type 96 tanks and not Type 99s. On an extra note we were suppose to see US and German tank crews compete this year until Russia-NATO relations soured over the Ukraine Crisis, although Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu invited them for next year's tank biathlon. I was hoping to see Abrams and Leopards, maybe in a couple years until relations are slowly restored. Anyway which team do you guys think will finally win the 2014 tank biathlon world championship?

Here are some additional recordings.

The Opening Ceremony consisted of a 'Tanks Waltz' where a pairs of tanks would 'dance' across the field, along with cultural exchanges from the 12 nation teams. An IOS video game called "Tank Biathlon' that was inspired from the competition was released along with the opening yesterday.
