New Type98/99 MBT thread

There are six countries in Africa operating Type-59's so buying more is a viable option if compared to something more expensive. Burma/Myanmar is also operating Type-59D but they don't use that sort of camouflage.

Of course it's also possible that country like Yemen want's to buy cheap tanks to get some firepower against rebels or gulf countries are buying them for Syrian rebels.

Yeah, export seems most likely. An African country I suppose? I don't think any country in the Middle East cares for Type 59s any more, even if they are upgraded.

In the Middle East there are different countries .. I think that, for example, Iraq may well be a buyer of such tanks. Most of the Iraqi army now - it's light infantry on the Humvee. Given the sharp deterioration of the situation in Iraq, they might turn to China for a quick purchase cheap tanks.

A couple of new images of the 99a2. Does anyone know how many have been produced thus far?

I just put these pics here because I don't think there is a type 59 thread or general tank thread.

Some pics of 59D with new paint job. Export? Exercise?

There is a logo thing painted on the skirt but I can't make it out what it represents.

What are those metal sand-like particles on the turret of every tank? Are they just dirt or they serve some purposes?

Looks like anti-skid, to give the crew and maintenance staff more purchase when they are talking or working on the tank, especially when its wet and/or cold.

A 105 mm gun?

The shape of the fume extractor and it's placement along the gun barrel as well as the relative size suggest that it's NOT a 125 mm gun.

Great picture though, capturing the shell as it emerges from the gun barrel.

There's life in the old girl yet!

You know it is these kinds of improvements that suggest that the PLA is slowly becoming a much more professional army, and is slowly changing it's past political emphasis.

The tank is no longer just an expensive symbol in the mass-infantry army of People's War but is now recognized as an essential tool in the battlefield and thus needs to be easier to use and maintain.

They have come a long way and still have a long way to go.
