New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

It should be noted that at least half of Toyota's 2026 deficit YTD is attributable to RAV4 supply dwindling in the lead-up to the model changeover. For Q1 2025, RAV4 was the nation's best-selling vehicle with 13,800 sales. For Q1 2026 RAV4 recorded a mere 3,842 sales. April was the first month of availability for the new RAV4 and it immediately returned to being the nation's best-selling vehicle.

That said, the RAV4 changeover clearly does not account for the entirety of Toyota's decline YTD and they are not immune to increasing pressure from Chinese marques, even if they are better positioned than other Japanese brands here to weather the storm. It will be interesting to see how Mazda's electric vehicles from their joint venture with Changan, 6e and CX-6e, fare when they launch here in the coming months.

An addendum to my previous post: I forgot to include Seal 7 on the list of upcoming BYD models here.

I’m surprised people are still considering buying ICE Vehicles in China. I see no advantage of doing so, since the only reason people have reservations about buying EVs globally is mostly due tor limited number of charging infrastructure in their country, even so EVs have been growing faster globally. However China has no such limitations since EV Charging infrastructure is everywhere in China and EVs are dirt cheaper in China(even more than ICE vehicles in many cases), coupled with relative rise of gas prices due to Hormuz blockade. So I fail to understand why EV penetration in China by now hasn’t surpassed 70 to 80% to be honest. China should have the highest rate of EV sales in the world , almost as much as Norway who is the world leader at the moment with almost 90% , since China EV infrastructure is far more advanced and price competitive .
anyway. Let’s see if by the end of this year it will cross 70% at least.

According to Yiche, which aggregates data from official government agencies and automotive associations worldwide, Leapmotor registered 31,974 vehicles across 18 overseas markets between January and April 2026, a staggering 752.4% YoY increase.
The company has set an overseas sales target of 100,000–150,000 units for 2026. With cumulative overseas deliveries already reaching 55,126 units through April, CFO Li Tengfei expressed confidence at the earnings call: "Based on our first four months of performance, we believe the probability of hitting the 150,000-unit annual target has risen considerably."

Italy: 16,135
Germany: 4,523 (+358.3%)
UK: 3,676 (+1,121.3%)
France: 1,820 (+87.1%)
Spain: 1,355 (+228.1%)
Netherlands: 852 (+321.8%)
Israel: 665 (+39.4%)
Austria: 565 (+433.0%)
Switzerland: 509 (+197.7%)
Malaysia: 429 (+521.7%)
Slovenia: 341
Portugal: 339 (+3,290.0%)
Ireland: 218
Thailand: 190 (+458.8%)
Chile: 122
Czech Republic: 121
Sweden: 67
Uruguay: 47 (+487.5%)

Note: The 31,974 figure reflects vehicle registrations recorded by official agencies in 18 markets, while Leapmotor's own reported figure of 55,126 units covers all overseas markets (40+) and counts deliveries to dealers rather than end-user registrations. The discrepancy is due to differences in geographic coverage, timing delays between shipment and registration, and reporting methodology.
