Actually, I was referring to Sodium-ion for grid storage. China did not choose it because it is still new?
CATL only expects to form its basic industrial chain for sodium-ion batteries by 2023. Sodium-ion battery mass production is still ramping up. In the mean time LFP batteries will be used as a stop-gap if needed. The real competition for batteries in grid storage solutions is pumped hydro.

Sodium ion is just now beginning to be commercialized by a serious player while lithium ion has been commercialized for decades; it retains an enormous advantage in built-up capacity. I expect the inherent advantages of sodium ion to tilt the balance in its favour a decade from now when supply chains and factories are built up and new lithium supplies crunch. I'll tell you right now that the day will come when grid operators "mine" their existing batteries for lithium, sell that to EV makers, and install Na-ion in its place.

Someone did a tally of the current production capabilities of the 3 "New Blood" of Chinese EV world.
As currently stands.
NIO will have enough factory capacity for 30k monthly production by the end of 2022 and still 30k by end of 2023. They produced 12k in June.
Xpeng will have capacity of 25k by end of 2022 and 45k by end of 2023. They produced 15k in June.
Li Auto will have capacity of 20k by end of 2022 and 30k by end of 2023. They produced 13k in June.
These numbers can all change. As we've seen with BYD, you can buy more land and get production going in under a year. In fact, I've seen a huge gap in new production capacity for 2022 vs 2023/2024. So, it's likely they sign a lot more deals for more plant additions in the future.

Crazy to see how large of a conglomerate BYD is. The BYD electronics has signed deal to produce Xiaomi 12S series mobile phone metal and plain leather back cover, metal middle frame, PMH injection molding decorative parts and complete machine assembly.
