New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

China should work with these asean countries to build up local charging stations that work with Chinese standard. It's a huge competitive advantage for Chinese cars to do so.

The actual charging ports and standards don't actually matter that much

Building out the overall EV Interstructute, using Chinese batteries and the car apps (5G, IOT, self driving, car battery to grid) are more important

yet, the Tesla superchargers don't work with other cars. So yes, you need to make sure the chargers they build will work with Chinese plugins.

Tesla have opened up their superchargers to the public now, and are retrofitting the local standard charging cables to their charging stations.

Theoretically every charging station should be open to every vehicle.

Germans are crap at electronics. They even had trouble getting common rail injection to work initially. And they are even worse at software. The traditional auto brands just don't invest much in software and hardware. And unlike with other electronic vehicular components where you have established suppliers like Bosch you can't find the same thing in infotainment.

Lol, German software is so bad right? I always tell people, name a German software company other than SAP. Now name one person who likes working with SAP, lol.

They are using a new system developed with nVidia in Audis. It is probably a lot better than the old one, but still there are a lot of ridiculous designs. When you start the car it asks you to create a profile, then enter a code from a tag. The car can now interface with the phone app. Now before the phone app can verify you, please call your dealer to contact Audi to register it! What the heck!

In 5 year's time, I reckon you could buy an off the shelf infotainment system.

But until standards are established, everyone will have to customise the infotainment system to the electric vehicle components

You can buy aftermarket entertainment systems now. Only problem with them is that they won’t have the deeper integration with the car, software updates for the actual car interface, etc.

Sany launches battery swapping stations for faster charging alternative

By ZHENG YIRAN | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2022-05-27 20:20

Chinese machinery giant Sany Group has launched its battery swapping stations, setting an example for the heavyweight manufacturing industry in green solutions for electric heavy trucks.

The first batch of battery swapping stations, located in Chengdu, Sichuan province, Zibo, Shandong province, and Ezhou, Hubei province, were officially put into operation. The stations offered a strong power exchange supply and efficient energy replenishment experience for local construction projects.

Yi Xiaogang, executive president and chief engineer of Sany Group, said: "With our advanced technology, changing the battery for a heavy truck takes only 1.9 minutes, setting a new record in the industry."

Battery swapping involves switching dead batteries for ones that are fully charged rather than the more common method of recharging exhausted batteries at a charging station.

According to a report from industry new media "Truck Player", compared with traditional charging facilities, battery swapping takes a much shorter amount of time. For station operators, swapping stations take up less space than battery charge stations, saving construction costs.

"The battery swapping mode provides customers with an additional option, which is also convenient. The establishment of the swapping stations promoted the development of pure electric heavyweights," Yi said.

Official data showed in the first quarter of this year, sales of China's pure electric heavy trucks skyrocketed 761 percent year-on-year to 4,615 units, showing explosive growth in the sector. By March, there were over 100 heavy-duty truck swapping stations in the country.
As a leading solution provider of swapping stations, vehicles and batteries, in the second half of this year Sany plans to release more battery swap products, it said.

AUTOBAHN SPEED?

Volkswagen, which is spending around $55 billion globally on EVs by 2026, launched its new-generation of ID. series in China early last year but missed its goal of selling 80,000 to 100,000 cars last year. It aims to sell 160,000 to 200,000 ID. cars this year, though it has sold only 33,300 through April.
Both legacy auto makers and their government need to wake up. They do not have the advantages that their ICE cars enjoy in China anymore. The German government just refused loan guarantees for VW's China investment, which amounts to cutting one's nose to spite one's face.

VW denied German government guarantees for China investment, report says

Germany's Economic Ministry has rejected Volkswagen's application for government guarantees for new investment in China over human rights concerns, a report says.

Battery news: not one, but two, battery makers will start mass production of semi-solid batteries in China later this year.
1. Gotion:

In addition to the 360Wh/kg product, Gotion has already built prototype samples of a semi-solid-state battery with an energy density of 400Wh/kg in the lab, according to Zhang.

Current lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries can reach an energy density of about 160Wh/kg, while ternary lithium batteries can reach 210Wh/kg, Zhang said, adding that Gotion's 360Wh/kg semi-solid-state battery has a greater advantage in energy density.

Speaking at a forum at the 2021 World Manufacturing Congress on November 20 last year, Gotion Chairman Li Zhen said that the company's semi-solid-state battery, which it will supply to a local manufacturer of high-end pure electric vehicles, achieves a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.

2. WeLion
On March 27, Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology confirmed that it is NIO's semi-solid-state battery supplier.

WeLion is working with NIO on a plan to launch a hybrid solid-liquid electrolyte battery with a range of 1,000 kilometers on a single charge based on the ET7 model, the solid-state battery supplier's chief scientist and founder Li Hong said at the time.

The pack, which has a capacity of 150 kWh and an energy density of 360 Wh/kg, is expected to start mass production by the end of this year or the first half of next year, WeLion's Li said.

Shenzehn/HK/Macau autoshow is going on right now to my great surprise. All the major Chinese automakers brought most of their cars along.

NIO is showing off ES6/7/8 and ET5/7, EP9. These new models look fantastic. And the 150 kwh battery pack on ET7 is quite other worldly. There is of course the news of them opening up a plant here in America. Electric viking covers it here
insideevs covered it too and they are obviously huge for Western EV lovers

Keep in mind NIO already has a R&D center in San Jose. I wonder if that will be play here. Even though Cali has really high costs, maybe building a factory in Cali will remove some of the stigma attached to Chinese automakers. Cali is the largest EV market in US by a long shot and they are not particularly attached to US brands. BYD also has their factory in Cali. When it comes to selecting factory locations in America, politics is just as important as labor cost.

Electric Viking also covered the progress of Gotion high-tech
As discussed, semi solid state batteries could have major energy density advantage over what we have right now. The fact that BYD hasn't gone to production with its solid state technology yet tells me it's probably not as ready as some of these up & coming battery makers are touting it. We will see. It's possible that BYD will suddenly tell the world that its own solid state batteries is ready when launching its premium brand. There is rumor of BYD reaching 180 wh/kg in pack level for its next gen LFP battery, but it's not on Seal just yet.

Looks like a nice car, but there are so many makers now trying get to EV space with good looking cars and not a lot of car manufacturing experience.

Another one is Baidu's Jidu, which is a partnership with Geely

I get Geely trying to get involved with everyone so that it doesn't get crushed by the oncoming BYD training, but this is quite adventurous of Baidu trying to get in the crowded space that will be dominated by BYD with a lot of other competition.

One more on export to ASEAN market. As we know, BYD is building a plant for Dolphin in Thailand.

(just 88k RMB after rebate is pretty good for something BYD exports).
What I didn't get before is that GWM already has its own plant in Thailand and did very well with its release of Ora Good cat with 10k orders in a week

With that much demand, Dolphin should be able to do well once it builds a local plant and really start advertising.

Ora Good Cat is also getting into Malaysia
