I find it unfortunate that despite Avatar being the highest grossing movie of all time, almost all discourse surrounding it is either about how much money it makes and how it's overrated because le unoriginal plot and simplistic characters.

I'm not one of the haters, I really loved the original, the looks of Avatar elicit the same response in the brains of adults as that of children going to Disneyland for the first time, alot of what makes the world of the first Avatar movie look so great is Cameron lifting the bioluminescence/organisms of the shallow ocean and applying it to land, the second movie is just returning to the source of the inspiration. I do like the characters as well, but there's little depth to most of them. If only Cameron put as much thought/ambition into the plot and characters as he did the environment and visuals ,but alas we do not live in a perfect world.

Some random thoughts after watching The Way of Water, I have really noticed that alot of movie scripts demand alot more from the actresses than from the actors. Most male characters (main protagonists) are written to be stoic diamond faced statues that doesn't emote to anything ever or stoic villains that occasionally grins menacingly before defaulting to not reacting to anything ever. Whereas female characters(MC's love interest) are written to emote alot more and respond dramatically to a significant emotional events.
I don't think Jake even looks sad after his son died???
There are of course female protagonist written to be diamond statutes, but they typically aren't nearly as well-accepted, such as Ray from the New star wars.

I actually do think the characters had quite a bit of depth in the second one. To me, I think people get too caught up in writing "good bad buys, bad good guys" or characters chockfull of one liners.

Avatar's characters might be archetypes, but I do feel they were well written and developed. Plus in a way that's why James Cameron is able to appeal to so many people globally, its familiar no matter your culture. As someone who thought the first one's characters were dull as rocks, I did genuinely like Jake's kids in this one and was scared for them in the end, not to mention eagerly awaiting what's next for them in part 3.

Granted yeah, I'm surprised the story structure is the exact same as the first one and wish he changed it up, but in the end this movie didn't cross 2 billion globally just on the special effects alone. At least that's my take on it.
