I actually do think the characters had quite a bit of depth in the second one. To me, I think people get too caught up in writing "good bad buys, bad good guys" or characters chockfull of one liners.

Avatar's characters might be archetypes, but I do feel they were well written and developed. Plus in a way that's why James Cameron is able to appeal to so many people globally, its familiar no matter your culture. As someone who thought the first one's characters were dull as rocks, I did genuinely like Jake's kids in this one and was scared for them in the end, not to mention eagerly awaiting what's next for them in part 3.

Granted yeah, I'm surprised the story structure is the exact same as the first one and wish he changed it up, but in the end this movie didn't cross 2 billion globally just on the special effects alone. At least that's my take on it.
I actually got more of the emotional impact of the movie on the second viewing(it's only movie I watched twice in theater), since I couldn't tell the two brothers apart at first while their Navi names aren't something you could immediately grasp. On the second viewing, they feel much more like someone you know rather than strangers.

James Cameron really don't like the MCU mucking up his list of highest grossing movie does he? I hope he gets it, even if it's practically cheating(Avatar cockblocking Endgame with the re-release).

Non stop superheroes movies has made me jaded and irrationally root against them. I really cannot fucking stand another superhero movie taking place in generic environments anymore.

Saw The Wandering Earth II over the weekend; great film as a prequel.
Unlike modern american films where the male leads are portrayed as bumbling goofballs and emotional wrecks for the Mary Sue Heroine (Looking at you, Feige era Star Wars), the main characters of The Wandering Earth are stoic, strong, dutybound and heroic.
The theme of having to beware of AI (also a plotline in the first film) was interesting as was the depiction of robots which reminded me of the walking refrigerators in Interstellar.

It was good that Chinese cinema is now introducing the malevolent american into its films as the United States in our timeline is preparing itself for an 'all of society' war against China.

They've a specialist team just for the UI (the UI on monitors and touchscreens in the movies are presented as-is, instead of post-production add-in, so to enhance realism), and the heavy vehicles are not props but real deal sponsored by XCMG, and the production crew complained about how much effort they needed in order to break the windscreen as those come standard with ballistic glass.
