The ambiguity and double talk, it worked because my guess would be two reasons.

1. Since it is ambiguous for all sides, then there is always talk. Talk on the international scene is always about diplomacy. If they are practicing diplomacy correctly, then they are not at war.

2. The double talk between mainland China and Taiwan, allows the other side a great deal of latitude. At least that was the past. The power discrepancy is too large now.

But hey! If the ambiguity allowed mainland China and Taiwan to develop relations and get along in the past, it still should be possible to continue to do so into the future.

It is the Americans who find it increasingly difficult to live with, the ambiguity, the unknown, and the rise of China.

Sorry I disagree that Beijing doesn't seek respect from the US. Look at how Asian countries brag about who the US likes more than China. It's like the Teacher's pet mentality. Why do the students hate the Teacher's pet? Because they all know it's about believing they're the favorite of the teacher over everyone else.

Look at the rising anti-Asian violence "because of the pandemic" being committed against any Asian ethnicity and not just Chinese and Asians still seek acceptance by the US. At a personal level, you see Asians bragging about their association with white people as sign they're better than other Asians. I know of Asian women who only date white men for that very purpose where around their boyfriend's circle of friends especially white women look at them as less but that's okay just as long as they feel superior to all other Asian women. I've read that Beijing seeks acceptance from the West because the Chinese people see that as important hence legitimizes their rule by giving what the people want. Any connection?
Tbh in the last 5 years I see this less and less, in the last 2 years I've seen practically none.

Not sure if there is an age / country differential but in under 35's, in Australia at least, there's an unspoken solidarity in the Asian community. It's gone from "I deserve as much a place as you in your community" to "f you, don't tell us who we can or can't be".

Even looking at 'popular' culture, there is a new sense of pride in asian identity, and pride in not exhibiting 'white' behaviours. e.g. Netflix series bling empire (partner watches, not me) they bag each other (in a sense of looking down on uncivilised behaviour, not humblebrag type bagging) when someone 'acts white', plus making a point of promoting and hyping asian cultural practices.

Of course, countries like Japan, sk need to make lip service given their situation, however deep down they still desperately want to exercise their sovereignty.

As for Beijing's take, I'm sure they're 110% clear on how it actually goes, hence the recent moves in SEA, South America etc, right in America's "backyard".

@antiterror13 Sir like @Michaelsinodef posted an aid package for attending the US ASEAN summit, the travel cost and accommodation alone won't cover the expense of the delegation...lol. Instead of addressing relevant and important issue affecting the region, they have to listen to Brandon long and repeated monologue with sudden expression like "I'm Joe UHHH...Come On man" meme and shaking hands with invisible man...lol

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday held a meeting with visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet in south China's Guangdong Province, elaborating China's position on human rights issues.
Wang welcomed Bachelet's first visit to China as the UN high commissioner for human rights, saying it is the first time after an interval of 17 years that China has hosted a UN high commissioner for human rights, which is of landmark significance to both sides.

He said that he hopes Bachelet's visit will be a trip of enhancing mutual understanding, strengthening cooperation and clarifying matters.

During her visit from May 23 to May 28, Bachelet will visit Guangdong and northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and undertake extensive exchanges with Chinese people.

Five principles

Wang told Bachelet China has always prioritized the right to subsistence, adding that the country feeds nearly one-fifth of the total global population with less than nine percent of the world's arable land.

He mentioned that China has established the world's largest social security system and the universal coverage of medical insurance system.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, China has insisted on putting people and life first and has done everything possible to protect the lives and health of its people, Wang added.

China always regards development as a matter of priority, Wang said, adding the country has eliminated absolute poverty, meeting the goal established in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 10 years ahead of schedule.
The Chinese foreign minister stressed that China has always made it a fundamental responsibility to safeguard its citizens' legitimate rights and interests.

He noted the country has constantly developed whole-process people's democracy integrating process-oriented democracy with results-oriented democracy, procedural democracy with substantive democracy, direct democracy with indirect democracy, and electoral democracy with consultative democracy.

Wang highlighted that China always focuses on protecting special groups, including the rights of ethnic minorities.
Through Central Government's support and paired-up assistance, the country helps ethnic minorities to promote common development and prosperity, Wang noted, adding that China effectively guarantees ethnic minority rights in administering state affairs.
China has always taken the protection of its people's security as a long-term goal, Wang said.

Chinese people's sense of security has maintained as high as over 98 percent in recent years, he said, adding the country scored among the highest in law, security and order survey by an authoritative international pollster last year.

Bachelet, for her part, congratulated China on its achievements in economic and social development and on protecting human rights.
She also spoke highly of China's contributions to promoting multilateralism, development financing and areas that are important for human rights development, such as sustainable development, poverty relief, climate change and ecological protection.

'No double standards on human rights'

Wang also stressed the importance of sticking to fairness and justice and rejecting double standards in developing the international cause of human rights.

Mutual respect should also be practiced, and human rights issue should not be politicized, he added.
Developing the cause of human rights cannot be detached from a country's realities and development phase, Wang said.
He added that principles of openness and inclusiveness should be held, and confrontation over human rights should be rejected.

Major countries should especially lead by example through practicing multilateralism, abiding by the principles and purpose of the UN charter, respecting international law and safeguarding international fairness and justice, said the Chinese foreign minister.

He said multilateral institutions of human rights should become a stage for dialogue, not a battlefield of division and confrontation.
"On the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment, China is willing to conduct constructive cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)," said Wang.

Bachelet said the OHCHR attaches great importance to China's role.

The commissioner said she hopes to make the visit an opportunity to improve mutual understanding and trust to jointly address global challenges and advance the development of the international cause of human rights.
