If soy beans cannot be sourced for oil production than the nation will simply switch to other, less desirable source of cooking oil (palm oil, rice bran oil, maize oil etc etc) in war times. The people may not have as high quality of food as they would enjoy during peace times but no one will go hungry.

I believe the majority of soy beans go into animal feed, not oil. So less soy beans means less meat.

I don't know why you say China food insecurity. China is independent when it come to grain supplying 95% of her need from domestic sources. As far as energy yes She import 55 % of the petroleum need from Middle east But mostly are used for transportation. In case of interruption she can depend on excellent public transportation of rail, subway and busses . Yes there will be inconvenience and hardship but hardly fatal. I still remember back in 60's there is hardly any car in China but people life still goes on.

Most power generating station in China use coal and they are mostly domestically source . China did import coal from Australia for the southern provinces because it make more economic sense as transportation cost is higher from sources in Shanxi and Inner Mongolia.

During WWII Japan seal the access to oil and food from Chinese coast And China does not produce single drop of oil then Yet they survive Today China produce 45% of her oil need from domestic source and mostly independent when it come to coal and hydropower. So bring it on
I also read that China sources about 95% of of its grains need from domestic supply, and the import is mainly for cattle yet China also export canned meat products. It food security is not that bad as one may believe. For energy, there is also Russia in the back yard.

I'm sure many people are aware the number one agricultural product imported by China is soy beans, but do you know why that's the case?

China is well aware of the possibility of food being used as a weapon. After all the state of Qi successfully used this strategy during warring state to allow it to achieve primacy among the five peers. And in recent years it was used to some degree of success against China in 2004 and again in 2006, but failed in 2008.

Since then China has enacted a deliberate strategy of ensuring food security among staple foods such as rice and wheat. Production of other agricultural products (eg soy beans) have been purposely de-prioritised to ensure sufficient staple food production. The idea is that during times of war and blockade China can always produce enough staple food to feed her people. If soy beans cannot be sourced for oil production than the nation will simply switch to other, less desirable source of cooking oil (palm oil, rice bran oil, maize oil etc etc) in war times. The people may not have as high quality of food as they would enjoy during peace times but no one will go hungry.

I am not aware what happened in 2004, 2006 and 2008?

That's Christian propaganda that the US feeds China and Chinese are ungrateful of Christian charity giving themselves an excuse to hate. All I see on the news is the US complaining about how China isn't buying US agricultural goods. In fact the stereotype is China doesn't buy anything from the US. So does China have a gun to Christians' heads forcing them to send all this free food China is eating? Wouldn't that be an act of war so where's the war? Do the Australians have a Chinese gun to their heads too forced to send free beef when Australia is complaining about Chinese boycotts not buying their beef? Maybe this is all charity and they're thinking out of the goodness of their hearts they're sending food to China that they're complaining China is not buying... so now Chinese has to be their slaves because of their kindness. This is the kind of logic spinning in their heads.

They complain because China signed the Phase 1 deal which had provisions for importing X amount of US products.

Currently, China is Not on track to achieve its obligations by the end of 2021. However this is mostly because of covid-19 so...

And another point is that after the deal was signed the US adopted a very confrontational approach to China so now China might want to dial back US purchases because it is never good to give money to your enemy.

The Chinese say they want to fulfil their obligations (I believe them). However when (not if) the Americans come back for a Phase 2 deal then I am expecting China to play a Lot more hardball against the US.

Now for Australians, there is no deal for buying X amount of Australian products, so let them whine

China can now reverse seal Japan's oil and raw material supply. Additional coal supply would come from Mongolia. Does China produce enough rice, wheat, soy beans, potatoes, corn and millet for itself? The Chinese highspeed railway system can replace domestic air travel to a large extent.
