Trump wants to impose tariffs on Canada in retaliation for wildfire smoke

President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose tariffs on Canada in retaliation for wildfire smoke, but it was not clear that he has the legal authority to impose such a levy.

“We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!” he wrote on Truth Social.

The White House did not specify what law Trump would use to implement the tariffs. Spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement that the president has “numerous tariff powers at his disposal” and is committed to leveraging them. He did not respond to a question about how the administration would calculate the tariff rate, after Trump called the cost of the pollution “incalculable.”

Trump added in his post that he planned to call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss the fires, amid economic tensions between the United States and its northern neighbor.

Canada and China were the only two countries that implemented retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump’s “Liberation Day” levies last year, and formal negotiations between the United States and Canada have not started over the future of a crucial North American trade pact.

Trump has a history of threatening tariffs in response to grievances and not following through. Last year, he repeatedly threatened a 100 percent tariff on foreign films; it never materialized.

He asserted that imported films posed “a National Security threat” of “messaging and propaganda.”

The Supreme Court this year also significantly constrained Trump’s ability to implement tariffs when it ruled that he could not use emergency powers to enact levies.

This stripped the president of a key instrument he had used to try to coerce foreign leaders and reshape world order in his second term.

Following the court’s ruling, Trump implemented a global 10 percent tariff under a different trade law, but that levy is scheduled to expire next week.

The northern communist smoke is blowing down. It’s blowing right into our great American cities. And you know who’s responsible? Canadian China. They are not our friend, folks. They are taking advantage of us like everybody else. But we’re going to tariff the crap out of that illegal alien smoke crossing the border.

Oof, titles like that won't be good for share price.
This doesn't bode well for Anthropic's IPO, which could be as early as October. Here is the archived version of the Axios article:

Here are some musings about the Kimi K3 affair:

This is not a prediction. It's already happening.

Well let's hear what OpenAI has to say about this news:

Yeah I think it's a pretty big deal, they seem quite panicked.

I wonder how people pictures this "full AI communism" in their head, if it's anything like post-scarcity Automated Socialism lead by benevolent Chinese AI girl then I'm in:

Full AI communism: that is a new one.

First this dude doesn't need to have Internet or electricity in his house, because, news flash, those are public infrastructure too, so only communists will have running water in their homes, a real capitalist would buy water from tank truck company that the company collect from the rain from time to time.

Second given the rampant scaremongering by US AI stooges do about these models as the ultimate weapon of humanity wouldn't be the most "MERICAH" thing to do than you running the equivalent of a nuclear bomb in your own computer? I mean, from the nation that you can buy a semi-automatic machine gun at 18 but can't drink a beer until 21 is pretty fitting doesn't?

And finally the real danger is the AI Feudal Nightmare that Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Peter Thiel and others Crypto Clown Silicon Valley Stooges want to drag the entire world to. But Dean Ball is too much of a stupid to figure out on its own. He needs to ask Grok about it.

Capitalist Neo-feudalism isn't even a new concept, Obama's TPP was an attempt before AI was a thing. Had it gone ahead they would've kept out the developing world by tariffing based on "not environmentally friendly" or "produced by exploited labour" or some such and the countries within the TPP will then become a mesh of different capitalist fiefdoms each centred around an industry Cyberpunk 2077 style. Trump really helped China out back in 2016 when he shut it down on the first day of his presidency.

Full AI Communism is already taking off as a meme thanks to that spicy take

The problem of trying to ban Chinese models is it's trivially easy to post train fine-tune an open weight model to become a new (American) model. Just example, Cursor's Composer 2.5 is a post-trained fine-tune version of Kimi 2.5. Cursor never touts this but this is well known. It takes a Chinese model and re-makes it into another model. In what universe can you regulated/ban it? It's no longer Chinese anymore as it's post trained.

So think about this, they literally cannot ban it, so what can they do? Anthropic better IPO soon to cash in because long term they have no enduring moat unless they make a breakthrough in AGI which is unlikely with LLMs. There is no justification of all these enormous compute spend if China just releases a free version 6 months later. The moat isn't there if token costs are sky high because you are basically brute forcing it with compute. At some point, open weight models will be good enough for the price point to do most of the routine agentic or coding tasks, and closed source frontier will be left with planning or debugging stubborn problem.
