Still China should question Japan's true intensions and at least make a complain to the IAEA. Give them another chance to show their true colours first. So that if China needs to activate the UN Enemy State Clause, it had already exhausted all peaceful options first.
This is undoubtedly a salami-slicing tactic. After repeated probing, international public opinion will become desensitized and eventually accept the possibility of Japan acquiring nuclear weapons.
China and other friendly nations must develop effective responses and contingency plans to Japan's nuclear ambitions.

Too bad they didn't get the nukes and immediately nuke the US as revenge for nuking them first. What happened to the all the banzai bushido samurai martial spirit bullshit? Bunch of meek chickens is what they are. Their ancestors are rolling in the grave because of their weak descendants not avenging their dead nuked asses.

This is undoubtedly a salami-slicing tactic. After repeated probing, international public opinion will become desensitized and eventually accept the possibility of Japan acquiring nuclear weapons.

Public opinion games is ultimately meaningless bullshit in the face of realpolitik hard power of a superpower determined to ensure its will is enacted.

As soon as Japan takes any verifiable concrete steps towards acquiring nuclear weapons, China will unleash the full might of its hard power on Japan with the nonnegotiable aim of verifiable and complete denuclearisation. It will start with the complete economic sanctions dictionary, shortly followed up with a total naval blockade. Any attempts by Japan or its allies to forcibly break the blockade will inevitably result in full scale military kinetic strikes on everything remotely nuclear related in Japan. With the utter destruction of their conventional military forces as a prerequisite of that. And at that point full invasion is such a small additional step China would be mad not to seize the opportunity.

The western public opinion can be as against this as they want. But no amount of wishful thinking is going to magic up the hard power they need to actually stop it from happening. If they unwisely try, all it would do is result in the destruction of whatever military forces they send, and open themselves up for sanctions and even direct military attack by China if it feels like it. Indeed, China may decide to purposely overreact to the first western minnow power to overstep to set an example for the rest of the full magnitude of shit they will be pulling upon their heads by stepping into this.

It isn't just coping.

Undoubtedly they know they're losing the fight.
Undoubtedly they know there's nothing they can do about it (being overtaken).

This is then The Standard Playbook of unnamed sources and anon insiders close to the project (etc) to shape the narrative against China by reinforcing that China "copies", China "steals" - that China is the antithesis to good, moral, successful western values and is therefore "The Enemy"

The last thing they want is for their populace to view China in the same light as say Japan for instance. The moment China is viewed as a beautiful country with fascinating culture and wonderful people, they will not have the popular support required to justify conflicts with China, whether economic or kinetic.
They only view Japan positively because they cut off their balls with WW2 and Plaza accord. Thats the price of begging for acceptance.

You far overestimate their clarity IMO. No they don't know this, they live in an alternate reality. Every humiliation or defeat is viewed in isolation and as temporary, never as a corner of the iceberg. Once you understand this it is all clear.
