Just cut rare earths supplies to Japan and see what they can do with their industries. With Japan raising interest rates, their economy will falter anyway.
China can cut a lot more stuff than RE if the goal is to collapse Japan's economy.
But since Japan is a trade dependant economy that relies on export to keep their currency stable so they can afford to import everything, just banning import of Japaneses stuff can already make a sizable impact to their already troubled financial situation, tourism for example is a not insignificant source of foreign currency income, and if China goes after Japaneses cars, which I don't think it's a big if considering China already did it to Korea, that'll hurt even worse.
People still subscribe to this caste system where China is the dalit and everyone is above it. Therefore they still think they should support the guy above it by default. The reason they get angry with China is because it can punch back pretty hard and all these so called higher castes are getting black eyes. A huge loss of "izzat" if you ask me.
Haven't you noticed it in history? Most people support the status quo first. Supporting the up and coming guy who is not 100% proven is too risky. They only pretend like they always supported the new guy after he wins coz now he has all the clout.
Thats fine. China never really got much help when it was at its lowest point but still managed to punch its way to the top. What I don't like is when all these cowardly countries who never did crap for China when it was in conflict start demanding China basically solve all their problems. We have quite a few posters on this forum that show such entitled mentality.
This is why China doesn't really bother with "friends" coz in geopolitics, there are rarely any real friends. Finding a friend who will genuinely help you even out of blatant self interest is rare enough.
China can also demand all trade with Japan to be done in the Chinese currency, as China is their largest trading partner. That will force Japan to dump their US treasuries, since they are the largest foreign holder. This in turn will collapse their master's currency.
