I think Shanghainese are patriotic citizens who help China.

I'm not sure where this myth of Shanghainese being separatist or unpatriotic is coming from.

Do we see large-scale protests in Shanghai? No. Do we see terrorist attacks in Shanghai? No. Do we see Shanghaiese waving or wearing foreign flags? No. Do we see large numbers of Shanghainese complain or criticise China excessively? No. Do we see any Shanghaiese who want to secede from China? No.

There are areas in China in which all of the above are true. We all know which areas of China they are. But they're definitely not Shanghai.
There are netizens' memes about Shanghai, which partially correspond to reality. I would advise you take a look at the Shanghai based media, online, TV and newspapers. A lot more liberal vibe than what you'll find in the rest of China. Even Guancha media has a lot of liberal voices, I don't mean the Op-ed.

Shanghai shitlibs are a well known phenomenon.

The solution is the same as Hong Kong, make them realise there's nothing inherently superior about their city and they can be replaced if needed.

Cut down Shanghai to size and distribute a bit of land to Zhejiang and Jiangsu, take over Shanghai SOEs like SAIC, promote Shenzhen for finance etc

The whole “Shanghai Independence” thing is getting blown out of portion for sure. It is a none issue, but it could become one if grossly mismanaged.

However, neoliberalism is a widely held and practices way of life in Shanghai. It is true that Shanghainese on average are wealthier, plus lots of China’s corrupt elites use Shanghai and HK are places to store their wealth before shipping them abroad. Shanghai is also the headquarter of many western MNCs, so elite liberal western men also comprise small but highly influential population in the city. Then you have historical memories of Shanghai being extremely hard hit by the Cultural Revolution, so most Shanghainese hate Mao. Mao literally purged Shanghai due to the city’s ties to KMT elites and western influence. When you combine all these factors together, you see a city that is much more cosmopolitan and pro-west, pro-neoliberalism, whilst Shanghainese have a sense of superiority over the rest of China due to their supposed closer connection with the west, particularly Britain, US, and France. However, such pro-west, pro-capital, and pro-liberalism do mean that Shanghainese want independence from China. Far from it.

Relatives speaking, Shanghai does have more problems. It has more money and most foreign connections compared to the rest of China, so when those “degenerates” tried to score political points to protect their often illicit assets, they have direct access to foreign media outlets sitting there. That’s why you hear so many stories coming out of Shanghai. People in Chengdu and Shenzhen are equally angry at the mismanaged lockdowns, but they don’t have the media narrative power like the Shanghai-based “degenerates.” Keep in mind that nobody was there to speak on behalf of the actually citizens suffering from the lockdown. It was a political battle with the lockdown victims being used as cannon fodders. And for the 大白 neighborhood committees and security guards empowered to carry out the lockdown, they were powerless to deal with the well-connected degenerates, so they exploit the ordinary hardworking people by trying to force them buy overpriced food/materials from them. Unfortunately, Shanghai “degenerates” you mentioned just happened to be so connected internationally and within the party apparatus. They are the Yeltsins within China. Otherwise, how did they get so rich and well-connected in the first place?

Sounds like Shanghai needs a Cultural Revolution-like purge? Well if you do that, you may as well kiss goodbye to 40 years of successful development. That’s why I argue that there are no short term solutions to this problem. The long term solutions lies in making judicial system more effective and fair, allowing other social and public forces to check the plutocracy of those degenerates.
Why would purging a few traitors in Shanghai eliminate development? Shenzhen was the original SEZ and is doing fine. It is right next to Hong Kong, yet they have far less problems with ridiculous political idiots than Shanghai.

In fact Shanghaiers often whine so much about how Huawei is bad, DJI is trash, BYD is copy, etc. And yet all of these are Shenzhen enterprises.

The degenerate is you, people who who complain about the government that kept them safe. If they don't like the voice and representations they have, so they bite the hand that feeds them and guards them, then they should try and see how much voice they have when they're dead like they deserve. If they want liberal freedoms, they can find all of it that they can handle on the frozen concrete next to the reefers used to store dead bodies by the American hospitals.
How do I feel save if I can’t even get food? Or once supplies do arrive, I have to bribe my neighborhood committee to just get a bite? Or my entire family forced into a concentration camp simply because my neighbor is sick? How would you feel if someone dress up like a klansman, kill your dog, and forcefully drag your entire family into a quarantine camp? I am assure you that you will stop being a pinkie once 社会的主义铁拳 teaches you a hard lesson, and you will realise that you have been nothing other than a 韭菜 waiting to be harvested by 赵家人.

In some countries people can get shot in their own homes by trigger happy cops while a few miles away, cops allow stores to be looted while they're sitting in a patrol car in front of the store because they're on coffee break.

They can say only 64 people died while 3000 are missing from a hurricane. Then take almost 10 years to clean up.

But if you criticize them even 1%:

"Go back your country"

"You wanna find out why we don't have free healthcare?"

"Fuck around and find out."

Compared to that Chinese are exceptionally rational.

For those of you who believe that Shanghai is an uber-liberal or pro-West or separatist city. Show me two pictures of Shanghainese people, living in Shanghai, physically doing one of the following.
  1. Defacing the Chinese flag
  2. Waving an American flag out of love for the West. (Doing so as part of their job duty - e.g. diplomatic events, filming education videos - doesn't count.)
I've never met a single Shanghainese person who wore a foreign flag or wanted to secede.

In fact, I've never met a single mainland Chinese person who did any of the above. Maybe there are some in Xinjiang or Tibet.

I'm confused. Are you speaking from experience of being a black man in America? Because all those points you made are exactly what African Americans go through on a daily basis.
