Well I did say later that even Japan and Korea haven't exactly cracked that nut of global entertainment either. Squid Game and Parasite are more succesful than any Mainland Chinese production has ever been, but still turned out to be one hit wonders that hardly heralded Korea's ability to go toe to toe with Hollywood and HBO. Meanwhile about the only entertainment area where Japan is hegemonic is video games. Their movies have been dead ever since Akira Kurosawa kicked the bucket, let's not even speak of their live action dramas, and anime still remains a niche carrying the stigma of being for nerds only.
It's not just the movies but the stars themselves. Other than Jackie chan, jet li etc. almost no Chinese actors are known outside of the immediate sphere.
Same with music. I see someone like Taylor Swift being a global phenomenon however I don't see Chinese artist comparing similar influence or viewership in the Western hemisphere.
K Pop bands are the closest Asians ever gotten to penetrating the anglosphere but they are SK not China.
I believe a big part of it has to do with language. English is still far more widely spoken all over the world than Mandarin and will continue to be so in the future.

yep there's lots of ex-colonial governments that forced people to learn English. China is one of the few countries that remain culturally free.

meanwhile most googled TV show in the world in 2018, despite Google being banned in China and the show having zero English:

Sir before K-POP there is Canto-Pop and Mando-pop with Teresa Cheng.

Sir If I may regarding song artist the present Chinese singers tramp the Collective West big time (I used to be a big fan of western music BUT no more), you're right about the obscurity because of language. BUT if you have the time and a music connoisseur please check the following Chinese artist and enjoy their music.

top of my list

Hua Chen yu

Zhou Shen

Pu Shu

Huang Xiao ling

Han Hong

Jason Zhang

And one more thing being a Chinese chauvinist , I can proudly say that the sound of Mandarin being sung and spoken is truly pleasing to the ears.

Most people are forced to only like those who their media orders them to like. Its a sad state of existence.

Chinese are free to choose among the entire media market. Chinese stars organically rise up among Bilibili casters and are chosen by the people. A very different model than the top down command media that many outside China are used to.

@emblem21 brought up a good example, Hanser. She has 4M+ followers on bilibili and is a VA for Honkai Star Rail. Was she hand picked by the corporations or media? No.

I also follow 多多poi, 泠鸢yousa, 西瓜君, SING, etc.

20M+ view music video from SING:

Japanese singers have even made their own version:

Both Japanese singers have their own bilibili channels, that's how much emphasis they place on the Chinese market.

I got known of this girl when she challenged the song "Left Hand Point at Moon" (左手指月) of Sa Ding Ding (萨顶顶) which was well-known for leaping over 3 8-tonnes. However, I think no one can do "Left Hand Point at Moon" as well as Sa Ding Ding does.
