Unfortunately, the nations surveyed make up a bulk of global economy and have some of the richest markets. So yea, their views matter.

China is horrible at soft power, and has very little cultural appeal even within Asia. This is unfortunate but also true. It is also easy for western media to counter Chinese narratives due to public mistrust of Chinese media.

I really don't understand the obsession with soft power coin by Joseph Nye when over the period the truth will materialized itself case in point Coronvirus. Remember that China neighbor korea and Japan are either competitor or scare of China due to history and disadvantage is size and potential . So even without any encouragement from the west their natural instinct is antipathy. But I am not so much concern about it because they too will see the light as more and more young people travel and broadcast their finding in internet media free of western influence Just check so many China travel video blog by young Japanese or Korean

Of course Western media is biased, and it’s part of their foreign policy to brain wash their citizens against China. The CIA once said: they public is easy to manipulate.

But my original point is China is at a disadvantage because of public perception of Chinese media as propaganda. It’s harder for China to win the PR war.

Never let your opponent dictate the battleground. The West wants to fight a PR war because they can't win an economic one, and can't be sure of winning a military one.

The best way to beat a propagandist is to show people the truth with their own eyes. The survey quoted only looked at 14 Western aligned countries. Last time I checked, there were 195 countries in the world. Let the Western media preach to the choir, focus instead on building lasting relationships with the rest of the world.

Obviously due to large scale, western PR campaign to tarnish China’s reputation. The public is easy to manipulate.

At the same time, China is at a disadvantage because the public does not trust Chinese media.
Who care about the media when they are trying there absolute best to hit China right now with anything they have. Consider the fact that these polls do not questions everyone in every nation and also to note that the western world is on the brink of catastrophe and would do anything to make themselves feel better. These polls will become worthless when the USA devolves into a mad max situation as all of these other nations will beg China for help no matter what if China is still standing tall. The reason these nations are so unhappy is simply because the very pinnacle of democracy (USA) is failing so badly and they don't want to admit this fact until there is simply no other option

China cannot expect to become the dominant power in the world without causing hate and anger in the current dominant power which is not just US but the alliance of european-european settled countries along with their vassals in east Asia who are happy to be of an inferior status as long as they are allowed to be rich.

China will have to break their dominance with brute force of sheer size. China's population is bigger than US-EU and East asian vassals combined. So, it can beat them all once it rises to be a rich country as well. Then its GDP will be bigger than all of them combined.

The bigger China gets in GDP, the higher some of those countries will depend on China for their economy. Sooner or later that alliance will be completely ineffective as certain countries start to become more China friendly. This is already happening with Italy and Spain and many other Eastern European countries being much more China friendly. These EU countries are also poorer and have benefitted less from EU and have a lot resentment against the northern European countries.

As China keeps growing it will become the catalyst that will break apart EU unity and create two sides. That will enable China with more access to the friendly EU countries.

Another factor is that those ruling powers make a tiny minority of world population of 7.8 billion people. And the rest of the world is rising in economy too. China will have to be strong enough to rise while completely cutoff from the current ruling class and rely on the rest of the world's 6 billion people.

As the rest of the world grows, they will have their own desire for recognition. This desire will fuel tension with the ruling class. A strong Turkey for example, is becoming a headache for EU. As time passes, Egypt, Algeria could become headaches. Then there is Russia already anti-EU.

In Latin America, a richer Mexico and Brazil will be a huge threat to US. They have no desire to live under US domination and as their wealth and power grows, they will become even more China friendly.

Finally there is Australia and Vietnam, they will need to start worrying about a powerful Indonesia that is rising nearby. Australia will never be happy with a powerful and muslim Indonesia nearby, that will become its primary concern.

Japan and Korea counter each other in hatred and hostility.

China will use their regional rivals and strengthen them to balance them out. Ultimately China will become the neutral arbiter that is above those petty conflicts and become the benign ruling hegemon that manages the world.

HI "solarz,

Never let your opponent dictate the battleground. The West wants to fight a PR war because they can't win an economic one, and can't be sure of winning a military one.

This best sum up the attitude of the west, cant beat them smear them.

Another way is just improve ourselves and don't let them dictate your way of life. We overseas Chinese had experience it daily, we surely can teach our brethren a thing or two how to overcome. Its discrimination plain and simply, just like our forefather before us.

The US locked up South America pretty tight. Just look at all the coups. Magically all left-winged governments in South America vanished. Poof. Except for Venezuela and not for lack of trying was it. Coup in Brazil, Coup in Equador, Coup in Bolivia, etc.

One of the failures of western policy at the high end i.e. awareness of their true motivations (out of hatred for competition in access to resources and political power rather than those trumped up charges), is believing all of this competition is set at a zero sum game - fundamental economic problem. The reality is there is competition but there is room enough for more players. This I believe is why China is not totally complacent over responding to Indian aggression which is/was actually happening despite no attention being paid to it. At least it was happening before the recent responses.

India has similar tools as China had in the second half of the 20th century. India just hasn't mobilised itself to properly utilise its natural advantages and it certainly hasn't used every means necessary short of going to war and taking things by force like the west has in the past. Well it has annexed land and may do what the US does if it had the military muscle, but those annexations aren't really payoffs. They've been robbed blind by the Europeans for centuries as an example of what I mean by using violence as a means to progress and enrich itself.

CCP definitely recognises the potential in India and the competition that comes with it. But again the CCP also realises it's all NOT a zero sum game and all of us can enjoy near equal levels of living standards, equal levels of political power (as national blocs), and equal opportunities even when the entire world is industrialised and developed. It's just an impossible PR and multilateral relations juggling problem at that point.

The westerners want everyone to stay down not just out of fear of competition and eroding political power but also out of some sense of their self-convinced superiority. Others rising to their level and surpassing them, challenges their own dogma like the class leader suddenly being challenged by someone who used to be an underachiever for a long time and after hitting the books is catching up fast. The class leader naturally may feel certain things. It's like showing a devout Christian or Islamist absolute undeniable proof that their religion is false or at least flawed in many ways. It cannot be accepted and every level of mental gymnastics will be applied to soothe their disintegrating world view and dogma.

All of this is really just human nature and when you've been top dog for a while, you learn to hate those catching up fast to you. It's like female competition or business competition... even in the workplace. Just goes to show how mature and civilised westerners are i.e. barely better than a caveman. We're truly not too different. No one can claim superiority here. Can really turn one into a misanthrope when one appreciates the true depravity of human nature.
