This is what i talk about more often. When it comes to determining global role of certain power, it's power gap,not the individual power that is key factor. America has never been a de facto military power, even after USSR collapse. Almost every where america went, the other forces had/have intervened. De facto power means when anyone changes status quo, there is no one to restore it. Like British or rashedin empire before. When British empire came here with guns & cannons , we were still using arrow & swords. America could never create such gap in their entire history, even after having head start due to having large pool of defected German scientists.
A large part of america's military adventurism is derived from safety of geography, due to fact that it's hard to physically access it. We've been misinterpreting it as part of their power. America always has been trying to play a far bigger role that it can handle.
Their power actually comes from economy.
Large population backing a large industry creating lots of civilian goods. Money is then used to undermine global institutions and bribe dictators in weak countries to have a personal interest in following them. The middle east in particular is the area where US investment has paid off the most.
Iraq and the initial Afghanistan invasion are often touted by Americans as examples of US military prowess, when these "wars" were really just Americans attacking their own dictators because of ongoing mutiny and were viewed by the international community largely as internal affairs. These small 3rd world countries did therefore not recieve much support if any at all. Easy to bring down a house when you're the one who were holding the support pillars up to begin with. They show "prowess" the same way Russia attacking Chechnya shows "prowess".
US military record against militaries of free countries is pretty damn abysmal. Vietnam. China. Forced to use MAD argument to stop USSR despite USSR economy being small. The only major success is maybe Serbia, a country that is literally completely surrounded by US puppets and has no international friends nor even an arms industry.
Iran's continued resistence is yet another reality check about US power. In terms of gdp and population ratio, Iran's balance against America is similar to the balance between Ukraine and Russia. Yet, America has never dared to invade Iran despite Iran ostentibly being a large thorn in their side. There is a lack of confidence.
Hence, I don't believe US will ever invade China either. They may threaten a lot, they may even fly drones above Chinese airspace like they did with Iran. But they won't react when China shoots them down and won't attack on a meaningful scale.
