After decades of deep propaganda by the Soviet government, the citizens no longer believed anything the government said ("There is no truth in Pravda"). There was no longer an effective counter to the Western propaganda claiming that the people would be wealthy if they dumped the Soviet Union. So they dumped it -- and they learned that the West was lying too.

On a more serious note, this just shows that the CIA has blackmail material on potentially every so-called "allied" nation. If a country's leader suddenly acquiesces to American wishes, it's a pretty safe bet they're being coerced in some way.
