China haters will say the DOD is just trying to scare Congress to get more money. Others will say China can take Taipei in 24 hours based off this. What's the truth?
I suspect Bob, that what this is really saying is that the US cannot win a reactive war with China over Taiwan, but will need to be pro-active and get everything into position first, including Air and Land Forces put onto the Island itself. It means that the world is probably getting a bit more dangerous than it already was..

But by transfering massive american forces into taiwan won't it automatically trigger preemptive PLA invasion?

Yes it would.

The risk of this happening has shot upwards in the past few years as US-China relations have deteriorated.

It's part of the reason why there are 230 new nuclear missile silos being built in China.

Theoretically, 230 missiles with 10 warheads each comes to a total of 2300 warheads.

But I reckon there will actually be a lot less as many of the silos will be used as decoys.

But even 500 additional warheads should be enough to deter the USA from going to war with China.

China is holding military drills in two navigation restriction areas in the South China Sea region amid news that a UK aircraft carrier task force arrived in Singapore on Monday and is about to enter the South China Sea with the plan of transiting "international waters claimed by China." Experts said on Tuesday that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) will stand ready to deal with any improper acts by the UK warships and see their South China Sea tour as a chance for practice.

From Tuesday to Thursday, China will hold military exercises in the South China Sea southeast to the coastlines of Chuandao, South China's Guangdong Province, and passing vessels should stay five nautical miles away from the restricted area, according to a navigation restriction notice the Maritime Safety Administration of China on its website on Monday.

Another area in the South China Sea off the coast of Guangdong's Maoming is also hosting military exercises, from Monday to Wednesday, according to a separate navigation restriction notice.

As the PLA drills go on, a UK aircraft carrier task force, led by the HMS Queen Elizabeth carrier that has long hyped its plan to challenge China by transiting the South China Sea, arrived in Singapore on Monday, according to the carrier's Twitter account.

Based on previous UK statements, the carrier and its escort ships will likely hold exercises in the South China Sea or conduct so-called freedom of navigation operations on Chinese islands and reefs, potentially similar to the HMS Defender destroyer's doing in the Black Sea last month, as a means to display alliance with the US, a Beijing-based military expert who asked to remain anonymous told the Global Times on Tuesday.

While the Chinese military drills are not likely directly related to the UK warships, they show that the PLA is at a high combat readiness, the expert said, noting that just like US warships that intruded Chinese islands and reefs in the region, if UK vessels do the same, they will also be expelled by the PLA.

The PLA will closely monitor the UK warships' activities, stand ready to deal with any improper acts, and also see this as a chance for practice and for studying the UK's latest warships up close, another Chinese military expert told the Global Times, requesting anonymity.

The South China Sea has some of the busiest sea lanes in the world and is the lifeline of China's maritime trade, and the allegation that "freedom of navigation is under threat" in the South China Sea is simply untenable, a spokesperson at the Chinese Embassy in the UK said on Tuesday.

"If this allegation is true, the threat could only come from the one who deploys a carrier strike group to the South China Sea half a world away and flexes its naval muscles to heighten the military tension in that region," the spokesperson said.

Observers also noted that the UK carrier was recently struck by COVID-19 with more than 100 cases, and its escort ships were having technical issues.

region.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during talks with a nine-member delegation led by the Taliban’s chief negotiator and co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in the northern city of Tianjin on Wednesday.

It was the first time a senior member of the organisation had visited China since the Taliban’s capture of several key districts in Badakhshan and Kandahar provinces. Taliban fighters have taken control of around half the country up to its border with the Chinese region of

Wang said the withdrawal of US and Nato troops from Afghanistan represented a failure of US policies and called on the Taliban to push for a role in the peace process.

“The Taliban in Afghanistan is a pivotal military and political force in the country, and will play an important role in the process of peace, reconciliation and reconstruction there,” Wang said, according to a foreign ministry statement.

Wang said China would support Afghanistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, but he also demanded the Taliban cut off any connection with the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM).

“ETIM is an international terrorist organisation listed by the UN Security Council and poses a direct threat to China’s national security and territorial integrity,” Wang said.

“Fighting ETIM is the common responsibility of the international community and I hope the Afghanistan Taliban will cut ties with terror groups such as ETIM. The Afghanistan Taliban can contribute to an effective crackdown against those groups and play an active role in regional stability and development.”

Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem said the meetings focused on the political, economic and security issues facing the two nations, as well as the peace process.

He tweeted that the group had assured China that Afghan territory would not be used to threaten the security of other nations, and that China had promised not to interfere in Afghanistan’s affairs but to help build peace and solve problems.
The US stepped up air strikes in southern Afghanistan against the Taliban on Sunday, with General Frank McKenzie saying America was prepared to continue if the Taliban offensive did not stop.

The Taliban has called the air strikes a violation of the Doha agreement – the peace deal signed by Baradar with the US in February last year that paved the way for the withdrawal of American troops, due to be completed in late August, and the eventual intra-Afghan negotiations.
Afghanistan and China are also expected to be the focus of talks in New Delhi between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Indian officials on Wednesday.

Beijing has been closely watching the progress of US troop withdrawals from Afghanistan and sought to play a bigger role in the country. At a meeting with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts in June, Wang vowed to “bring the Taliban back into the political mainstream” and offered to host intra-Afghan peace talks.

“China’s position is that this should be resolved within Afghanistan. And the situation in Afghanistan should not threaten China’s security,” a source said, naming security in

, the Taliban has said it will not interfere in China’s internal affairs.

China previously hosted the Taliban in 2019, when a nine-member delegation travelled to Beijing and met Deng Xijun, then special representative for Afghanistan.

Yan Wei, an international relations professor at Northwest University in China, said it was necessary for both the Taliban and China to engage each other.

“Regardless of whether the Taliban will become the government, it is a key force affecting the political development and security of Afghanistan,” he said.

“The Taliban can constrain some other terrorist organisations in Afghanistan. China can through the Taliban put certain constraints on other terrorist organisations, which is useful for China’s security and regional security.”

The point here, is that the moment of preemption will be lost and that China would be being wholly reactive. For China to launch an Invasion at this point becomes easier said than done as any forces on the newly declared Independent Island would be massively supported with everything that the US can bring to bear and it will already be in position.
Unlike on the US Exercises, It would be China that would be having to be reactive and this is being shown to be the unfavourable position in any such conflict.

Just remember boys, the British doesn’t understand warning shots unless said shots land close enough to splash them with spray. Bonus points if anyone can put a round close enough to the bridge of their carrier that it can be clearly seen from their bridge. If you mess up and actually hit the bridge, well at least they got a spare so it’s all good.

All these states have one thing in common, it only takes one terrible mega disaster happening to the USA to basically clear the board so that Russia, China and other like minded nations can give the Anglos hell, one that will finally take away any chances of holding power in the world. They want a war, they better be prepared to die in the kind of numbers that they have wrought on the middle east for decades and then some

It's a quip from Churchill. Vietnam is an example; under the circumstances and constraints put out (inability to march into Hanoi), the Americans couldn't win and should have gotten out. Two decades, billions of dollars, and tens of thousands of American lives later, they got out. They were simply exploring all the other options before they made the correct choice.

As a large country and the Earth's preeminent economic power, the Americans could afford to do so without completely destroying themselves.
Mr.Churchill was dead when the Vietnam War was peaking in 1965. And most importantly that stupid quote "You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing after they have tried everything else.” didn't exactly come from Mr.Churchill. There are no exact record of the man saying such American propaganda on print, books, radio and t.v. it's alleged that the person who actually spoke or uttered those words was from an Israeli politician and diplomat, Abba Eban.

Since the premise and origin of that quote is based on a lie and at best on flimsy evidence I have no reason to believe that such fanatical belief in the U.S. divine providence or ability to ultimately arriving at the best possible moment with the best possible outcome for itself is nothing but wishful thinking and propagandist lie to pat itself on the back for undeserved achievements.

You ought to come up with a much more pertinent example(s) that actually support your interpretation that America always finding itself doing the right thing b.s....
