"China is gravely concerned about a US air force plane landing on the island of Taiwan on Thursday, and any trespass of foreign ships or planes into China's airspace or territorial waters will result in serious consequences, the Chinese Ministry of National Defense said on Thursday, and it warned the US to stop playing with fire"..

I am really starting to think that the US is losing its confidence in its ability to defend Taiwan. Yes, there is an element of ''salami slicing'' but I think that is secondary what this is supposed to be a ''show of force'' and ''commitment'' to what they believe is to deter China. They probably believe that if they lose Taiwan, their whole alliance system in East Asia will start to break down as their allies will question their competence. Considering that America leaving Afghanistan with its tail between its legs. I'm not shocked that US is very self-conscious about itself.

If Taiwan is reunified with mainland China, the US alliance system in East Asia will break down.

China will have demonstrated military superiority over the US in the Western Pacific. China is already at the centre of the Asian economy and trading network.

So why bother to ally with the US if it doesn't have anything to offer either economically or militarily?

Amid political division and constant culture wars, two-thirds of Republicans in the southern United States and almost half of West Coast Democrats want to secede from the country and form their own nation, according to a new poll.

released on Wednesday by Bright Line Watch and YouGov reveals that a large portion of Americans from across the US want their regional area to secede from the union, with southern Republicans and West Coast Democrats apparently the most dissatisfied with the status quo.

In total, 44% of southerners support secession, with 66% of Republicans expressing a desire for the South to part ways with Washington. Half of southern independents also expressed support for secession, as did 20% of Democrats in the region.

Over on the West Coast (which included Alaska and Hawaii), there was less desire to break away, with a total of 39% of Americans expressing support for secession – but here Democrats were the most likely to want to secede at 47%, followed by independents (33%), and Republicans (27%).

Though the South and the West Coast were the two US regions with the most desire to break free, numbers were also high in the rest of the country.

In the northeastern United States, 34% of Americans said they want to secede from the union, with Democrats and independents at 39% and 35% respectively, while 26% of northeastern Republicans felt the same.

Meanwhile, around one-third of Americans in the mountain states want to break off from the US, with Republicans at 43%, independents at 35%, and Democrats at 17%.

Bright Line Watch described the numbers as “distressingly high,” while data journalist Christopher Ingraham

it the “most disturbing datapoint I’ve seen in a while.”

Though Ingraham noted that most of the Americans expressing support for secession are likely just “partisan signaling,” he claimed that “part of the reason support for secession is so high in the GOP is that party elites all over the country are irresponsibly ginning up passions on it.”

Ingraham’s analysis, however, did not take into consideration the high numbers of Democrats and independents across the US who also expressed support for secession.

Americans in the US heartland are apparently most satisfied, with support for secession lowest there at around 30%.
Support for secession in the US is unlikely to fall any time soon, with Bright Line Watch noting that the numbers have risen in the past six months since the January 6 storming of the Capitol by Donald Trump supporters in protest at President Joe Biden’s election.

The most notable secession in US history took place in the 1860s, when the southern states of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Virginia, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, and North Carolina broke off from the union and formed the Confederate States of America – sparking the American Civil War.

Maybe there should be foreign interventions so that these people have the right to thier own country, and not be brutally crushed by the current regime. Is this not what democracy is about? Listening to the will of the people?

Biden administration looks to set up ‘red phone’ to China for emergency communications

What a joke!

The idea of this "red phone" is that both sides are committed to a red line. Within this line they want to put up a show of strength by yelling, screaming and jumping up and down without actually get into a real fight. It is like a boxing match that has certain rules not to be broken. In the match there is the referee, but in this geopolitical game there is no referee, so the gamers have to have this "red phone" to make sure both sides are still playing by the rule not breaking it.

Now, is there a committed red line between China and US? Apparently by the move Biden and his predecessor Obama and Trump is trying to get China agree with US version of the line which is right at China's door step including China's territory Taiwan on the US side. China agreeing this line would be "作茧自缚" and "画地为牢" (draw a line on the ground to imprison oneself).

The US leadership is too stupid to think that China is equally stupid to agree with such line. That is why I laugh at it as a hilarious joke.

Maybe some time in the future China could accept this proposal when the line is pushed to somewhere near the US territory water. But then I doubt the US would be happy for the idea.

Look at it from another angle. If US is committed to the principle of 1. solving difference WITHOUT military threatening others and 2. never use nuclear weapon for first strike there won't be risk of "misunderstanding" necessitating such "red phone". If the US is confidence of being invincible, what is the point to have such device to prevent being knocked at the nose? The whole idea is pathetic like little boy who dare to provoke others but being chicken to see blood.

The USSR engaged in such game precisely because it pursued hegemony as USA, red imperialist vs. blue imperialist. They are the same in the core, therefor in the same game. China is NOT USSR, apparently USA has NOT got that therefor still play by the old book of cold war.

Human beings are saved from drug addiction

And enabling addiction is not a "strategy" of cold war or something

If it is then British shouldn't be blamed for opium wars as they were just following a winning "strategy"
You failed to answer the question "what do China get as part of this deal btw?" You highlighted this question in your reply but answered with an argument of "saving human being in general". That is two unrelated matters.

I don't agree with the proposal of "actively making it worse", but I don't see China has any obligation to that cooperation deal therefor the question. USA has a mess at home, it is not China's mess nor China being the cause. Nobody should blame and demand others to discipline their own child.

If somebody is producing something that is illegal in China, China should take action on it REGARDLESS where they are sold to, there is no reason to serve the US particularly. The US can get China's cooperation through existing international organizations such as Interpol.

I agree with you here, that's all I was pointing towards

Purposely suppling drugs as weapons with no real targeted strategic reason is wrong (for everyone involved), that was all

The idea of the US breaking up is ironic because that's what they want to happen to China so they can lessen Chinese global competition. Republicans like to lie that blue states take more money from the federal government to fund socialist programs therefore red states are paying for it which is why Republicans believe they're the rich states. No, statistics show out all the states that take more money from the federal government than the pay in taxes only two were blue states. The leeches on everyone else are actually red states. They think their standard of living is suffering because their money is going to pay for blue state socialist programs, go ahead and secede because it'll actually be worse.
