Not just photoresist, Japan is an integral supplier of many components, chemicals, precision tools that go in all sorts of stuff. Even if everything could be replaced, it will have a big impact at least temporarily on China's own supply chain.

I can bet this will be implemented selectively against Japan's MIC only, not as others are saying to deindustrialize Japan or the like.

As long as China has replacement it is worth the short term disruption to kill Japan's industry, I don't think I need to spell out the obvious part.

This was a very big move. This would make Japan double down on "alternate" supply chains. Japan still has a solid grip on part of the supply chain where it has been very dominant. Other than that, Japan is the 4-5th largest economy in the world.
If US, the #1 superpower, has to capitulate due to rare earths card, who in their right mind thinks Japan has a chance?

China tightens export control of dual-use items to Japan, with immediate effect: MOFCOM
It is beautiful.

Specifically, under the decision, all dual-use items are prohibited from being exported to Japan for military end users, military purposes, or any other end users or uses that contribute in any way to enhancing Japan’s military capabilities, per the MOFCOM.

This isn't a formal economic decoupling between China and Japan; the situation isn't that bad. It's just targeting the JSDF.

China also has its reasons: Didn't Takaichi said Japan will interfere in the Taiwan Strait? Then what force do available to interfere in the Taiwan Strait? The JSDF. Therefore, an embargo on the JSDF is justified. Didn't the Americans do the same to the PLA?

Name one component that cannot be replaced.

It will be hard to replace them, and lead to atleast a short to medium term disruption:

  1. Photoresist
  2. Tokyo Electron Lithography machines
  3. Precision bearings, specially ones already designed into chinese products
  4. MLCC Murata, both low-end and high-end
  5. Industrial equipment - robotics, robot components, etc.

I am aware that there are Chinese competitors in all fields, but even if their products were equally performing (which they are not in many fields), even then it will take time.

Apart from that Japan is a big customer for Chinese goods, a big market.
Such debate can actually be resolved with one question:

Do you believe that China can decouple from Japan in high-end manufacturing, or do you believe that Japan can decouple from China's basic industries and raw materials?

Currently none, both need each other. But if China has alternatives for Japanese suppliers, so does Japan have alternatives for Chinese suppliers.

That's literally what I just wrote, will be very selectively applied to MIC only, and hence not in line with what everyone else is saying.

I don't think Tokyo electron produces lithography machine.
