Saves money but there's still only so much you should save on even for such a budget project.

External hinges is taking the piss a bit too much. The opening mechanism is going to be pretty much like any other. It's separate to the hinge. Usually hinges for side opening canopies (if any are used) are hidden on the inside. Like was there absolutely zero space on the inside? Again, the mechanism for opening and shutting is pretty much the same as any other side canopy mechanism. The hinge is part of the system but also sort of separate and it's not difficult to put them on the interior or go with a mechanism that doesn't require hinges.

Really a money saving endeavor that one. Maybe Pakistan had very little budget for a twin seater version development. This is the best CAC can offer for said money and the PAF was okay with it. After all the priority of the platform probably isn't so dependent on the extra drag those hinges impart or the eyesore factor.

Yea, certainly I doubt external vs hidden hinges saves that much money. I'm more thinking along the lines of a prioritization issue where they spent much more time on cost-reduction and making the project easy to ToT than minutiae like external hinges. It's not like external hinges are much of an issue for the JF-17 anyways; they have minimal drag impact and RCS reduction isn't a primary concern for the plane.

Hard to say why it has external hinges, but I doubt it was because Chengdu sent their D team.

It's not like this isn't a solved design issue that those engineers could have copied from else where eg Gripen's approach, or Rafales .....

Does feel like the "A" Team worked on the J20 and the "D" team at Chengdu worked on the design... very primitive to see in this day and age ...

It is very well designed. Wars are resolved by practical and simple means, not the most aesthetic. For now, prototype 0002 is worth more for what it represents for the development of new equipment and operational evaluation than hinge fittings.

The FC-1 Thunder (probable designation in Argentina) is emerging as the best candidate to meet the needs of the Argentine Air Force. Although the last decision will depend on the political power, by far the Chinese model, is the one that more than meets all the requirements specified by the Argentine Air Force.

As I pointed out above, the Thunder is exactly what the FAA asks for, however there are many pressures policies on the Argentine government.
Perhaps some weighty gesture by the Chinese authorities would be of great help in favor of this possible operation.
An FC-1 in the hands of a Force with combat experience and great operational prestige can be a great initial kick in the region for its products.
