Wow...is it just me or there is a lot of smoke from the engine. I know in past this has been discussed and may be RD 93 is not that great of an engine afterall. Any news on WS13 development

There is a lot of smoke from the engine, but not always. It is strange. The story in the '60's was that the Vietnamese were materially helped in defending their country against US aircraft because these were at the beginning of a thick smoke trail, while the engines of their MiG-21's didn't smoke. Why would more modern Russian engines smoke now?

Does China even intend to use the JF-17 themselves ?

Or are they just going to stick with the J-10 because it's far superior and worth the extra 10 million US dollars.

Longer leg of j-10 makes it more attractive than FC-1 even it may cos more.... Especially china is a huge country.

JF17 has provided China with a base line fighter from which it can build a more modern fighter aircraft, wether China buys it or not doesnt matter China has learnt alot from JF17 which it can inco-operate into J10
when JF17 was launched right from the start its designed was based around the requirments of a fighter pilot and not from a military company, its basic design layout is derived from decades of actual wartime experience from PAF pilots and Chinese designers, fighter pilots actually had a say in the development of the JF17

when it comes to WVR combat no airforce in the world has come out on top of PAF pilots, its drilled into cadet school from day one, again and again they practice WVR its cornerstones of all PAF doctrine going back decades, during excerses PAF pilots have scored on F15 Eagles and RAF Typhoons in Turkish war games, they live and breath dogfights , PAF flying hours exceed 200 and even 240 hours

this works for Pakistan because they dont have a big airspace they cant re-treat same is not true for China, so both requiments are different Jf17 for Pakistan and J10 for China

The JF-17/FC-1 is a good low-end combat aircraft and would probably not be around today if it weren’t for the needs of the PAF. It is an excellent WVR fighter with BVR capability (something that Mig should have developed instead of the Mig-29, but I digress). However, in my opinion, I continue to see the Chinese purchasing the J-10 and J-11 because of the common engine and because the J-10 is an indigenous aircraft.
The JF-17 will be like the F-5E was to the Americans whist the J-10, J-11 will be as the F-15 and F-16
It’s not a matter of quality or performance, but of economic.

The JF17 would be little less then block52+. Little in most aspects. I do not think it is something like F-5E.
