So whose Virginia class boat is in her baffles? No doubt this is a fine opportunity to gather some serious intel on the Liaoning, and her combat screen, particularly the other teams SSN, I love a good game of "cat and mouse" and its extremely exciting to wonder who is receiving the honors of this first opportunity to get up close and personal???

I just hope the US and Japanese Captains have a plan to maintain separation as these types of adventures tend to be in close and personal, and the opportunity to "bump and rub" are very high. Indeed the "opposing team" might be looking to do a little "bumping and rubbing"?? HEH! HEH! HeH!

I know Jeff Head could likely come close to answering my question???? HAH! HAH! but I'm thinking he still has his Top Secret Clearance, those don't really go away? do they?

(I've already posted it in
CV-16 Liaoning Thread II ...News, Views and operations
):

google translation of the caption
:
"China's first aircraft carrier "Liaoning" was confirmed for the first time in the East China Sea by the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force. An escort ship of the Maritime Self Defense Force confirmed seven ships, including the first Chinese aircraft carrier "Liaoning" and a missile destroyer, in the western region of the East China Sea around 4 pm on 24th. As of now, there are no violations of territorial waters."
You can bet that the JMSDF is shadowing and watching this as closely as they can.

You can also bet that a US SSN (probably a Virginia) is also watching.

Well, let's just say there are things you cannot talk about. Some for certain lengths of time...others never.

Also took an oath to the Constitution...that one does not end either...ever in my book.

Yep, I'd just like to be a little bird and know who the players might be on the US, Japanese team, so Chinese ASW will also be working overtime to see if they've got company, no doubt we will be working that angle as well.

I would imagine it would be a Virginia class boat on the US team, and an AIP boat on the Japanese team???

Merry Christmas Jeff, and the Liaoning sailing in the Sea of Japan is indeed news, not having to go into Bo-Hai bay for that intel is also a plus...

So the sea of Japan could be very crowded below the surface, US, Japan, Chinese, and Russian???

Yes indeed, this would be one heck of a training exercise for all three perhaps four party if the South Koreans decide they are not gonna be left out and join in the Christmas / New Year bash.

Apparently a z-9 chased something to the edge of Japanese territorial waters

Doubt a SSK can keep up with a CSG at cruise speed but I am sure a P-1 was looking down from above.
It looks as if they had headed south, circled around Taiwan and entered the SCS passing the Luzon strait.
I wonder what the hell they were trying to prove?
They should have sailed to Hawaii and done some fighter launch exercises as a demonstration of force.LoL

Yes for SSK and the P-1 is excellent the best ASW MPA for weapons load especialy P-8 very good also but initialy a civil aircraft transformed for price reason and not customised for these missions than the P-1. With 4 engines P-1 is very comfortable at low altitudes.

But TF speed depends of replenishment ships always the more slow... max 20 kn, cruise speed about 15 combatattants + 10 kn for both so 2 solutions again with TF or he have left.

Also a good practical example for we can see a CV with her fuel is a major logistical burden for replenishment ships in more a Kuznetsov carry about 5 /7000 t of fuel... others combattants in general around 10 % of their tonnage 052C/D ~ 700/800 t, 054 around 400, 056 about 200 t.

A 903 carry with fuel aviation 10500 t + 680 log/ammos ( Kuznetsov Class have 2500 t of fuel, ammos ? ) so u can see the need for the Liaoning... and the utility of a Type 901*... carry sure 20000 t of fuel as Supply and USN advantage with CVNs don' t need refuel... only the 4 - 5 combattants.

In more nuclear propulsion take less room and allow clearly more space for aviation logistic, fuel, ammos about + 30 % for same size.

* In more allow a combattants to move almost to full speed 25 - 26 kn.
