Germany will overtake Japan's GDP if the yen keeps going down. Using the IMF projections for 2021 and 2022, Japan will probably drop from third to fourth largest economy. Its 2021 GDP will be smaller than Germany's at EUR/JPY of 152 and its 2022 GDP will be smaller at EUR/JPY of 143. So if the 2022 prediction is correct and EUR/JPY stays where it is today, Japan will be smaller.

Dropping to the fourth economy might be the shock Japan needs to rebuild its economy

That would be really shocking considering that Japan's population is about 40 million bigger than Germany's.

To Japanese no shock is bigger than being overpassed by China. They did not wake up then.

Seeing the Japanese government, and the public at large, are siding with the US even more, I'd say that they will probably stay asleep.

both U.S. and Japan are well ahead of China in pharmaceuticals and medical devices manufacturing, two highly profitable industries.
China needs to invest more in the research of life sciences. According to Nature Index, in 2021, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the world's leading institution in physical sciences, chemistry (ever wondered why China makes some of the best EV batteries?), Earth and environmental sciences, but only the 5th in life sciences.

China was always going to surpass them because of the population size. Being surpassed by a smaller country should be a bigger shock
