Re: New Generation Fighter

F-22's mission isnt to knock out enemy air defence ppl, they cant carry that much munition. their job is to escort B-2, and to achieve air superiority.

londo i dont think UCAV at its initial stage is gonna be very cheap, but i think its definitely the way to go in the future. i think another thing that might potentially improve a UCAV's performance is the fact that since the pilot isnt in any danger, he is under less stress in combat, which prolly leads to better performance against a manned fighter. the question now lies in the tactical aspect, since UCAV's are controlled by wireless signals, doesnt that make the pilots susceptible to ARM's?

Also the UAVs are now even more prone to being lost and captured in a sense, as well as EW

Re: New Generation Fighter

With only 20(?) B-2 remaining, there's not enough airframes to rely on that plane alone for the SEAD role.
The F-22 can carry JDAM and SDB to hit radars it has located with it's EW / ESM suite. It's also more flexible with it's speed. If you hit well, a small bomb is enough to take out a radar for some time. So a few Raptors can do quite something to kill SAM sites. And the Joint Strike Fighter, wich will for sure take over SEAD roles in the future, can't carry more odnance than the Raptor either.
Plus SEAD is actually part of achieving air superiority.

The F-35 is going to be cleared most bombs in the US inventory up to 2 2,000lb bombs internally... alternatively, they can carry 8 Small Diameter Bombs as well, or 2 JSOW glide bombs. This is an improvement over the F-22, which can only carry 2 bombs up to 1,000lbs.

AFAIK, the Raptor also carries two 1000lbs JDAM or up to eight SDB. Wich is the same amount ordnance. I think you don't need 2 tonnes of explosive to take out one radar.
And finally it still remains true, IMO, that the Raptor will be still stealthier than a Lightning II.

Generally, I wanted to say I think a modern (5 gen) fighter, even though optimized for air combat, can and should still be able to act in the A-G role in a limited way. Espacially for day one door kicking missions.

And even more though if a state of the art dedicated bomber is not available in numbers. Even more a case for China than the US, regarding this new gen fighter part.

F-35 however will be cleared from the start to use most of the USAF's air to ground weaponry, and has a deeper internal weapons bay. That means more heavier and bulkier weapons can be carried.

Re: New Generation Fighter

I think you guys are missing the point a bit. The fact is that a stealth fighter doesn't have to perform a stealth role 24/7. You don't need 2000+ fighters to achieve deep penetration and control over enemy airspace. You only need a fraction of that, and the rest can be outfitted with weapons externally to perform other roles where stealth isn't as important or is unnecessary. The F-22 and the F-35 were designed to be versatile, fitting many different missions roles, not all of which require stealth.

i think f-18s are good enough for the non-stealth roles

I think F-18 mission like F-35.
F-15 mission like F-22.
I mean non-stealth roles.
