I don't know if this is anything telling but this is suppose to be a graphic of the Beidou network.

Re: New Generation Fighter

IMO the J-XX will likely be based on the Mig-1.44 project to which China acquired access to in the 1990's. Sort of an updated variant with technology and know how developed since then.

Alternatively, it might be a stealthy J-10....or a hybrid with elements from both.

It's practically impossible to develop a completely new fighter in such a short time frame as some are suggesting here.

Though it's also been suggested that China has been working on this project for a very long time. It doesn't take as long to play catch up as it does to develop new technology and concepts, but I suppose whether concept and technology "borrowing" counts under the definition of "completely new", which could be debated either way. Either way though, the Mig 1.44 wasn't a VLO design, which is why I have some doubts to whether China would base its 5th generation fighter on it.

Never knew that China actually did participate in the Mig 1.44 (MFI) program. Although being invited, I do not think China accepted the offer.

It wasn't a fully fledged VLO design but the Mig-1.44 satisfied the basic requirements: low RCS, internal weapons bay, supercruise ability.....it's a good basis for further development.

It's believed that some of Mig's plans (and some engineers) were passed on to China.

The model on the pic below looks a lot like the 1.44

I still think a year is overly optimistic.

it could be overly optimistic to say that, but its close enough give what the PLAAF said. and it cant be right the statement that the fighter has just entered wind-tunnel stage...it takes a long time to do that. so even if the fighter flies in 2012, it should be pretty close to finishing wind tunnel tests by now.

Also it isnt practical to rebuilt a fighter fromo scratch, with zero influence. All fighters are built upon existing ones. F-22 is somewhat built on the F-15, so any fighter that comes out now from any nation isnt COMPLETELY new design. For China they have been working on the next generation airframe since 90's and its been a decade and a half already, so for them to announce that a new generation fighter to be in flight soon. Isnt that too suprising to me, but what suprises me is that hints of flight via late this year or next, cause my speculations was around 2012-2013.

A fair representation or completely off the mark. Place your best now. ;)

I am leaning towards the bold part...

The canards and the wing are not in the same line. Bad for stealth from what I've heard. J-XX is said to have the canards and the main wing in the same line.

I am leaning towards what 70092 posted sometime back : Post no. 442

Re: New Generation Fighter

Anybody know where Fischer got this pic from? I was just reading his papers from a couple months back, and he seems to think this is the likely design as he used this pic in more than one of his recent papers.
