The Gun was overrated even in Vietnam, most of the kills were with missiles and most of the Gun kills were early in the war.
The last Gun kill between fighters occurred more then 40 years ago. Missile technology have evolved since the Vietnam war.
But to answer your dilemma if the J-20 merge with an F35 and both were somehow alone it would be a fight over who gets their Fox 2 of quickest. And if both run out of missiles the J-20 can always outrun Fat Amy.. :)

The rules of engagement had a major impact on US kill rates in Vietnam since they can’t shoot unless target has been visually identified.

Modern aircraft cannon has enough ammo for one target. It is better than nothing, but not by much.

It seems inadvisable for a stealth fighter to bring an opponent close enough to fire a shell, which means giving up its stealth advantage entirely
not true, for A2A, even for stealth vs stealth, it would be still BVR mainly

beware, stealth fighter only has good RCS characters in the front, it is pretty easy to detect from sideway, also there is anti-stealth radar in different RF band, and other detection and intermediate solution to guild missle to trace a stealth fighter from distance

While watching this documentary I was thinking the whole time that the J-20 doesn't have a gun. The fact that they ommitted the gun on the J-20 is made out of the presumption that the J-20 would never have to merge with its opponents. But what if they are wrong ? If hypothetically a group of J-20 and F-35 were to merge the J-20 without a gun will be f**ked. They made that mistake decades ago when the early MiG-21 Fishbed didn't have a gun and the American F-4 Phantom pilots didn't train to use their guns. Because they thought they didn't need the gun anymore with the introduction of air to air missile's. And they were wrong. The F-4 Phantoms got hammered over Vietnam and the MiG-21 got hammered over the Middle East by the guns of their opponents. What if they are wrong again and the gun is still needed. When you need it and you don't have it you are in big trouble. Lets hope the new J-35 has a gun.

Two things.

First, the J20 has a gun port and room reserved. They might not have a gun currently, but future ‘final form’ WS15 versions will almost certainly have a gun since it will have more than enough thrust to ensure there won’t be any compromise in terms of performance in adding it.

Secondly, even now, if a J20 and F35 were to merge, it will be the F35 that is fucked since the J20 has side weapons bays and HMD-cued PL10s while the F35 has guns (they may still have AIM120s, but they are not dogfighting missiles, and I’m not even sure the F35 can open their main weapons bays and deploy AIM120s while doing 9Gs).

how did you get that? just because WS-15 has enough trust?...

under this logic, would F-35 break M2.0 barrier if it change to XA-100???
