You don't make an OVT engine overnight. They had to the working on the engine used in the J-10 TVC demonstrator before the Su-35 purchase I think.

No question that they have been working on an OVT engine since the Flanker's acquired them early on, it obvious they have a handle on the technology as anyone who saw the J-10C perform at Zhuhai must have surely figured out! In days past our man the "engineer", (have you given up on us Bub?) was quite convincing in his argument that China wasn't particularly interested in OVT..

I'm imagining, nothing more, that those Su-35's have caused a real stir, as OVT is a game changer on the Flanker airframe, it's large, and although aerodynamically amazing, OVT does indeed increase its capabilities two fold.... as the J-20 uses all the latest aerodynamic tricks, canards, vortex generators, etc, etc, to maximize maneuverability, its already very agile! I'm not certain OVT would give it a lot more than it already has aerodynamically, I'm fairly certain it will put you to sleep with its 9G, maybe more pitch performance?

the J-20 is indeed a very high performance package already, it will only get better when the WS-15 is rolled out!

Far as I know, the Russian TVC, especially the one on the su-35 and su-30MKI was still a 2D nozzle? Although the exhaust is round, but can only go up and down with a fixed angle, inside of what J-10B TVC had shown a fully 360-degree rotation. So I will say getting su-35 might gave Chinese more inspiration or reference when they worked on their TVC development, but the technical link is soft.

Far too grainy to tell, I'm inclined to think it's one of the AL-31 ones. What's with the oO nozzles?

I must admit; I'm really not sure. Yukikaze told me that it would be 100% for sure a WS-10C powered one - also since it is said to be a recent image taken at CAc and all J-20s built since last year are using that engine. Otherwise I agree, the nozzle is strange - too long - for a WS-10.

Back in the days someone from CJDBY used sound analysis to determine that the J-20 was using AL-31 engines. If only he could run a test against this video.

Honestly, the engine on the right looks like a good old AL-31F. The petals are too long and they are not serrated. However, the left one may have room for interpretation.

Funny ... I for myself think exactly the other way around: The left one looks like a typical "closed" AL-31, while the other one looks "wider" ... but again; I'm not sure. But after looking again and again I think you are correct.
