Guys ... you need to understand the PLAAF serial number system. To make a guess there are already more than 75 based on a single number is like guessing the number of kids a pilot has based on the colour of its hair! It's impossible.

78233 means in fact 78x3x as standing for this particular unit - the 172nd Air Brigade at the PLAAF Cangzhou Flight Training Base and the xx = 23 means simply it is aircraft number 23. But this does not mean it is the 23rd J-20 within that unit nor the 23rd overall built. It is just a bort-number.

Otherwise I estimate, that there are about 36 built within the first batch equipping the two FTTB units at Dingxin and Cangzhou and the 9th Air Brigade at Wuhu. How many from the second batch are built I don't know.
Hi Deino, when you say first batch, do you mean first batch of j20a using ws10, if yes, what about those which use russian engines.

No, I meant Batch 01 are those with Russian AL-31F-XYZ variants even if some say only those with the WS-10C are called J-20A.

As such we have all so far confirmed J-20s at Dingxin (176. AB) are using Russian engines, Those at Cangzhou use the Russian one for the first four J-20s and the WS-10C from the fifth J-20, which is then a J-20A. All so far known at Wuhu (9. AB) again use the Russian engine and the single one confirmed from Anshan (1st AB) has WS-10C engines.

Sorry for the confusion.

Remember at the beginning of the year, there were several j20 (plus a dozen j10c) parked at cac factory, which are gone by now i suppose. Are we ever able to establish if those j20 are with al31 or ws10?

Continued...

This guy really did his research and a lot of the sources he quoted (Li Gang interview for instance) are Chinese language only. I wonder if he is a beneficiary of Sinodefence lurking.

Certainly possible, though reading that piece quite a few talking points, comparisons and citations sounded familiar to me, phrase by phrase.

I'm pretty sure most of those points I had raised in either of these two pieces, and many had not been published elsewhere before either.

Still, credit to at least be able to identify more up to date information.
