These J-20s were probably put out there deliberately for satellites to see, to serve as a warning to India.

China is too strong. Even if China did not bring the J-20 to the border area, Indians did not dare attack China. China does not want war (or pre-attack), so it does not conceal the drills and moves troops to the border, the ultimate goal is to gain a lot of advantage on the negotiating table. A few J-20s are not enough to put military pressure on India and it doesn't help much if war does.

^We really gotta get away from comparing platforms and start comparing systems (and logistics). Personally, I think the F-35 and the surrounding USAF support systems make a formidable combination in the Americans' arsenal.

For their part, China is also improving their sensor, communication and recon networks. The J-20 will mesh with all of those.

I have no doubt the Chinese air force is developing into a very credible force.

At the end of the day, it is foolish to dismiss any opponent/rival.

That being said, a platform vs platform comparison is meaningless because these fighters will be operating as part of an entire ecosystem.
I agree that we have to be careful about comparing aircraft such as J-20, F-35, and F-22 on the basis of which is the "best plane." There are so many factors that determine a type's effectiveness.

Networking could be an advantage for China. It has built its military rapidly over the last two decades. In theory, this may have made it easier to network aircraft and systems together - assuming they had the foresight to set communications standards early on. "Informationalised warfare" has long been an emphasis for Beijing, so I'd wager that data standards were worked out early on.

USAF, for its part, has challenges networking F-22 to pretty much anything else, including its stablemate from Lockheed, the F-35, let alone other assets or service branches. The difference is the US fleet evolved over a much longer timescale.

It's really anyone's guess how good J-20s sensor fusion and comms are, but it can be certain Beijing wants it to feed data to other assets, and in turn receive useful data. It's all about the kill chain.
