They should have designed less lengthy but perhaps a bit chubby ground attack missile that can fit in weapons bay but still maintain good range. A capability like this will be very useful in a war against US with very well defended bases and other targets in the 1st island chain. Kinda chinese version of JSM missile that fits inside f-35

China maintains the largest SRBM and MRBM arsenal in the world for precisely these targets. There's no reason to risk their primary air superiority platform when there are plenty of better alternatives. If there is a war over Taiwan, the J-20 already has a lot of crucial jobs to perform. As long as the Taiwanese air defence system is intact, then its primary job will be to knock out the ROCAF, starting with their E-2s and their patrol craft, then their tankers and their fighters. Next are the USAF aircraft out of Okinawa and the South China Sea. And finally, to engage any bombers and carrier-based aircraft. You wouldn't want to mix up strike packages when there are so many more important targets out there, and by the time you run out of targets, the US has already given up.

China has a saying “杀鸡用牛刀” and also "杀鸡焉用牛刀“。Meaning "Killing a chicken with buffalo knife" and "Killing a chicken need not have to use a buffalo knive".

In short "Over-killed" and "Not To Over-kill".

That is the case for a J20 in regard to carrying an air to surface weapon. Unless the "chicken" happened to be worthy of a "buffalo", i,e, a very valuable asset of the enemy, thus worth the risk to sacrifice a J20 in exchange for destruction of that enemy's highly valuable asset.

In summation, multipurpose missile building upon the PL-15 with improved kinematics and sensing. It may or may not be the same dimensions as the PL-15, havent heard much besides 6x can fit in an IWB (like newer versions of PL-15 folding fin)

There's also rumors of
1. Ramjet VLRAAM
2. Ballistic 1000km VLRAAM PL-17 successor

(If the new rumor is neither of these two, then I'd also like to hear more about it)

For claims as specific as that, unless they are from established first hand sources that we consider credible, I would not take those too seriously.

100km range is pitiful in high intensity battles. It's within the no escape zone of contemporary area air defense systems. Rocket boosted glide bombs are the minimum to be useful.

The J-20 should be able to defeat the X-Band radars in any SAMs that are launched.

Plus I expect long range SAMs to have largely run out within a week.

the west has a lot and i mean a lot of strategic depth. it can rearm in the time it takes to work through 3/4th of the globe worth of strategic depth. just like we're 3 years deep into "russia will run out of ammunition in 2 weeks", dont count on the west actually running out and giving up like that.
