To be fair, we have indeed seen a J-11 performing a cobra (even if it is really rare)

as by78 said, the flankers in the video seem to be in Russian Knights colours rather than any known PLA colours. It seems like someone spliced a clips of PLAAF pilots with some Russian Knight footage. at 0:50 it even looks like a Mig-29 rather than a Flanker though it's too blurry to be confident

I should have known better when I saw the Sina stamp ... *facepalm*

Anyway, here is a video of the J-20 performing some very nice aerial maneuvers from Yusheng. I'm not sure when this was taken but the music sounds familiar ...

The F-22 actually had a huge weight increase from design to production; the YF-22 weighed only 15000 kg, whereas the production version is around 20000 kg. The Su-27 Flanker weighing around 16500 kg, the J-20 can be said to be in the 15000-16500 kg range empty.

That said, the odd thing is how unagile the J-20 is for an aircraft with such thrust to weight and wing loadings. On full afterburner, with just AL-31FN3 (iirc), the aircraft should have a T/W slightly below 1, when fully loaded, and have a good 1.25 T/W at 60% fuel. Wing loading at 60% fuel should be around 300 kg/m^2, going with the 75m^2 figure. (This assumes 16 tons + 7.2 tons for 60% fuel with 12 tons fully loaded fuel).

How can T/W be <1 when empty and 1.25 when loaded? Unless you meant it the other way around. If T/W is slightly under 1 when fully loaded and 60% fuel. that is amazingly good with just a pair of Al-31FN3 or WS-10x. Most fighter are only slightly above 1 while empty (<1 when loaded) and J-20 has far less drag and more lift than those fighters owing to internal bays. That means an agility more or less equal to the well performing 4th gen fighters. Of course there's a lot more to it e.g. speed and altitudes. Not sure what you mean by unagile.

It actually is in the PLAAF's interest to show how agile it is, if it's truly agile, because then the J-20 obtains a greater deterrent function as a "super-fighter", and China's current stance is deterrence, not engagement. Remember Sun Zi, "when strong, appear weak, when weak, appear strong".

There's also the fact that depending on the airframes capability, you can show truly stunning maneuvers without overextending your hand; i.e, you can demonstrate 24 deg / sec sustained turn rate when you actually have 28 deg / sec STR capability.

Then going by that Sun Zi quote, China is appearing weak by not showing off therefore they are actually strong? If they showed off and just performed J-20 using modified low weight frame and super tweaked engines with minimal fuel, like you suggested would that mean they are actually weak? So going by this poor strategy, they are actually strong because they're not showing anything and not denying all the online morons claiming everything between J-20 being a Mig 1.44 with a different paint job and J-20 being CGI. So therefore China is super duper strong lol.

posted on the last page already by by78 and without the sina watermark... friendly advice -- if you see a photo on mil sina that you think is nice, check back a few pages if a similar (usually higher quality) photo has already been posted in the relevant thread first.

even better, try to find the original source rather than cross posting from sina because their photos are of lower resolution and has their ugly watermark.

Chengdu's 'official' photographer is back again...

Is it likely that the canards are used for braking or that's just a cool photo opportunity?
